Do you eat less in a group?

Mary's question had me thinking about a different kind of "hiding" that I do, and that's to be super-conscious of what's on my plate when I feel like there's an audience. You know that "What's the fat chick eating?" inventory that people do? Do you ever eat far less than you really want because you feel like your on exhibit? Or get put off when a host has an attitude that says: I know YOU'LL want a big slab of this birthday cake! Makes me want to die before I take a bite of that cake! Just wondering if anyone else has fronted this way. Annie

For me, it all depends on the situation. If I am out at a restaurant or at a family members house, I usually will eat more than I normally would, but that's to be expected to some extent since I usually calorie control and eat only 300 calories at a time. I usually try to make healthier choices, but oftentimes if appetizers are out, I will indulge. At work I try to stick strictly to my healthy eating, but that's more for my sanity than for what others think. I have recently learned that several women watch what those of us on diets and losing weight are eating and will comment to one another about if we are eating junk food. It's almost like they get happy if we do, but oh well :).

For me it depends on what type of group I'm with. When it is mostly strangers I usually barely eat anything at all. I'll pick at whatever is on my plate and fill up on water. When it is my family I'm eating with, I can overdo it if I'm not careful. My dh and ds eat huge portions, but they're both slim. If I don't watch myself, I can end up eating huge portions right along with them.
I seem to feel more self-conscious around groups made up of mostly women. I guess I feel that they're more judgemental. I'm usually the fattest mom at any of my sons school events. I may be imagining it, but it always seems like I'm being viewed as the example of how NOT to end up.

I do tend to eat less when I'm in a group. I usually don't eat everything on my plate. I have found over the years that I have become very self-conscious of eating in front of others. I have a really hard time eating in restaurants. I never gave it much thought until I saw TV programs showing how people react to overweight people in general. It makes it very hard for me to be in public now.
Sorry, I think I gave you more info then you wanted....lol
If I stay away from dessert then I'm safe! I usually eat very well portion-controlled meals.. my downfall is in deserts. So my technique is to ask dh to bring me a share (pretending to be busy playing/chasing/looking after ds).. He takes the clue... and I think it works for the public LOL (I hope?)
