Hello all,

I am happy I found this message board! I am hoping others with hypothyroid can give me some tips that I can use. I have tried many different types of diets (as we all probably have!) with no success. I did Nutrisystem, with no success. (HA HA, yes I stuck to it- to the letter) I need something to improve my metabolism. I am on thryoid medication, which still flucuates. My Dr. even prescribed some weight loss pills (Miridia) with no success either. I walk 2 miles 6 times a week and do a fitness ball. I have never ate like "a bird" but don't over eat or eat junk. If anyone has some suggestions, please HELP!

I do not have hypothyroid, but I do take medication that tends to make me gain weight. What my doctor said was that I needed to do harder cardio that maintains my target heart rate for at least 30 minutes to burn fat. Also she recommended that I do weight training to build muscle which will burn fat faster. Hope this helps. cyndi

Welcome to the board. I don't have problems with my thyroid, but I do lose weight real slow. My advice to you is never give up.. even if you tried for a million time, never give up. If you lose 0.5 lb a week, then that's success in my book (most of the time I am not lucky to lose that either).. but everything adds up.. I already lost more than 30 lbs.

Best of luck in finding something that works

Hi There - My name is Jena. I also have an underactive thyroid. What I have found works for me is to eat 6 small meals a day. I know you were always taught to eat less, right? Well, your blood sugar fluctuates throughout the day and eating 6 times a day controls that issue. I have had much success with this way of eating. I've lost 83 lbs with about a million more to go, but just look at it in 10 lbs increments. A typical day for me looks like this

8 AM - Strawberry Smoothie (1/2 c. vanilla yogurt, 1 c. 1% milk, 1 c. frozen strawberries, 2 tsp peanut butter, 2 tsp whey powder and 6 ice cubes blended - makes 2 servings)
11 AM - 12 raw almonds and 1 apple
1 PM - Roast Beef Wrap on a whole wheat tortilla (Roast Beef, blue cheese crumbles, dijon mustard, romaine lettuce and a cut up tomato all rolled up in the tortilla).
4 PM - Non-Fat Yogurt with a banana or some other kind of fruit
6 PM - Whole Wheat Ravioli (you can get this in your freezer section - save second serving for leftovers the next day for lunch) with 1/2 c spaghetti sauce and a great big salad with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, red peppers, onions or any other veggie you want to throw in there with olive oil based dressing.
9 PM - Leftover Strawberry Smoothie

That's it! It's easy and you get a lot of food. This is how I have been successful. Everyone is different. You need to find what works for you.

Take Care, Jena

Hello. My name is Melissa and I also have an underactive thyroid. My docs have never suggested a specific regimen but Weight Watchers is always what has worked best for me (along with daily exercise).

I am just getting back on the wagon after being off the plan for 3 months. I really hope to get my butt in gear again and I know that this board will help me do that.

WELCOME!

Melissa

Hello! Welcome to the board.

I have hypothyroidism too. I found that exercising and keeping my calories to 1500 per day helps me to loose weight. The most important thing is drinking lots of water. My thyroid was under control until I went into preterm labor. I delivered my baby at 20 weeks. Now my thyroid is out of wack again. Last week
