possible hot topic

i'm not sure where i should've post this since we don't have a "hot topic" group...

so here it goes..

I have been taking Phentermine for a little over 2 months now (Dr. Rx) not purchased over the internet. i've lost 28 lbs since starting the phen.

This weekend, my lovely sisters (who are also heavy) commented on my weight loss and were asking me what i was doing, so i told them.. they said i was a "CHEATER" for taking the meds to help me lose weight.
I personally don't feel like a cheater, the meds have just helped me control my apetite and have given me enough energy so i feel normal, instead of exhausted all the time.

i'm just wondering what your thoughts/opinions are on it. or other weight loss products, slim fast, OTC meds like dexatrim etc.

Thanks.

I have taken phentermine before and so has my mom. It really helped my mom, but it didn't do anything for me.

I don't think it's cheating, you still have to work for the loss. It's not like your taking a pill then eating a whole bunch of junk and still losing weight.

WEll....they can help..but they won't do it for you. You can take all the diet pills you want..if you hork out on top of that..they won't work. Don't give all the credit to the drugs..they MAY have helped a bit with appetite...but YOU are the one who decided to do the rest.

Don't let your family and friends get you down. Losing weight is hard to do. I get really sensitive when my family or friends try to give me advice, so I have tried not to listen to them. Keep up the good work.

Hi Sara,

I agree like the other gals that you shouldn't let the criticism of others get you down. And it's great that you've already seen results. I would encourage you to consider a couple of other things though. I say these things not to discourage you but to challenge you so that you can have long-term success.

First, do you have a plan for controlling your appetite once you stop taking this drug? You can't take it forever and your appetite won't merely decrease once you've lost the weight. So, it's very important that you develop healthy habits that will keep your weight off FOR GOOD! (I have no doubt you're already working on this).

Second, have you done your own research on this product? Just because a doctor prescribed does not necessarily make it safe long-term. There have been so many instances of docs prescribing things that have terrible adverse effects over the long run. I would encourage you to do some of your own studying.

Most of all, I encourage you to focus on forming good habits of healthy eating and exercise so that you can get off of that drug sooner versus later.

Keep focused on your goal! You have a great network of people on iVillage to support you. :)

I have been keeping track of my calories and portion sizes..
There have been several days that i haven't take the phen and i've done fine. in fact last week i didn't take it at all and i still lost 2.5 lbs.

yes, I actually researched it alot and spoke to several people who are on it or have been on it in the past, before i even asked my dr about it.

Thanks for the advise.

Hey, Sara...

"Cheating" is what bad kids do on exams, or that slutty waitress tries to get your boyfriend to do in a weak moment.

Cheating? Definely not.. you're doing a great job!!

First of all you lost a lot of weight on your own before you started the Phen. And I think you started once you hit a hard plateau (please correct me if I'm wrong here).. Second you're still following a healthy plan with the phen.. this is why you're seeing results.. it's not like you've been eating junk all the time and the weight was melting off. I wish that pill existed though LOL, but it doesn't and anyone who tried diet pills will testify to that. So don't make their jealousy put you down or undermine your achievement.

Then we come to the hot topic part :).. Here goes.. I personally will not use any weight loss pills because I feel weird about them. I am not sure if anything is 100% safe (even if they advertise it). And I can't think of staying on a pill for the rest of my life either. I chose to not use a pill. But again that what will work for me.. same as choosing not to go on a formal eating plan.. it's what works for me. I also think that a lot of people are using the pills because they feel it's easier and it will solve all their problems (I am not talking about you Sara, I am talking about anyone who thinks of diet pills as magic pills).

That's great, Sara.

It sounds like you've got the right mind-set and are going about things in a responsible, informed way.

Best wishes in reaching your long-term fat loss goal!
