i'm not sure where i should've post this since we don't have a "hot topic" group...
so here it goes..
I have been taking Phentermine for a little over 2 months now (Dr. Rx) not purchased over the internet. i've lost 28 lbs since starting the phen.
This weekend, my lovely sisters (who are also heavy) commented on my weight loss and were asking me what i was doing, so i told them.. they said i was a "CHEATER" for taking the meds to help me lose weight.
I personally don't feel like a cheater, the meds have just helped me control my apetite and have given me enough energy so i feel normal, instead of exhausted all the time.
i'm just wondering what your thoughts/opinions are on it. or other weight loss products, slim fast, OTC meds like dexatrim etc.
Thanks.

I'm sorry... cheating?! I agree with the pp that said that's what kids do on exams. You aren't "cheating" when you do something to take care of yourself and achieve a healthier life.
Is it "cheating" to take an asprin when you have a headache? Should you just barrel through it by youself, with no help?
Is it "cheating" to color your hair? Or to let a professional do your taxes? Or to get a car wash instead of busting out the garden hose yourself? Are all those people using online dating services "cheating" to find significant others, instead of hanging out in clubs or the frozen section of the grocery store? Do I "cheat" every time I use a calculator to do my math for me?
Of course not. That's just silly.
I would, without knowing your sisters, be inclined to say that they are just jealous, and trying to put you down because you're achieving what they want for themselves.
So lose that weight, keep it off, and enjoy your life. That'll show 'em. ;-)

some people go on 3weeks/off 1 others take it full time. mine gave me a 5 month script and said i didn't need to check in with her unless i had any concerns etc.
there is a woman i work with who has been on it for over a year- she takes it every day. her dr give it to her 1 month at a time and she has to go in every month to get checked out (she has a pace-maker and several other health issues) she started out at over 400 lbs and was the insurance company turned her down for the gastric bypass.
but she is doing great on the phentermine.. has lost about 80 lbs so far.

In my personal opinion, as someone who works as a Coordinator in a healthcare environment (by no means making my opinion any more or less certifiable than anyone else's), you do what you gotta do girl! I mean come on! Gee let me think about it... what's worse stuffing my face all day every day while doing no exercise ever and weighing 300 lbs or taking a diet pill while eating healthy and tossing some exercise into my lifestyle! Hmmmm... that's a tough one chic! It's almost a hands down, not even remotely close to lesser of two evil's in my mind! Obesity is a life condition and many physician's do consider it a lifelong challenge just as many other conditions. Some physicians even refer to it as an addiction of sorts comparable to nicotene, alcohol & drugs. It may take some going back and forth a few times to get it right. The important thing is that you find what works for you and stick with it. I'm not gonna say to you that if you get off these diet pills you should never have to touch them again b/c there is a 50% chance that you will need them again at some point BUT don't let that scare you! Even if you have to do this again for a few months in five years... so what! You are still the ultimate winner and the whole goal with weight loss is to win the battle! Hopefully you do this one last time and that's it but even if it's not, it doesn't make you a failure.
Most people who have had weight problems have had them a good portion of their life and it will take a long time to overcome those habits. I think that pills are sometimes necessary for treatment of obesity just like they are necessary for so many other things in life. It is a chronic lifestyle/condition. It DOES take more than just the pills. You have to exercise and you have to eat right. Don't let someone else tell you how to do this, they aren't fighting your battle for you.
I have been on Phendimetrazine for about fifteen months and have lost 75 lbs. I can tell you from personal experience that food and cravings have been an addiction for me all of my life. Even when I wasn't hungry, I had 'cravings' and thought about food constantly. It could be 8:30 a.m. and I was already thinking about what to do for lunch. I was also on Phendimetrazine about 10 years ago and lost a lot of weight but when I stopped working out (a couple years later) the weight slowly came back. I don't blame the pills, it was me as I was the one that stopped working out and started eating all the time again.
It's definitely an ongoing battle. Do I feel like a failure b/c I'm on them again! NO WAY! I'm just glad that I'm on them and making wiser decisions. I powerwalk 5x a week for one hour plus eat right and I know that this has to be a life change.
With phendimetrazine, there are some ppl who will continue on a slow release low does for (??? years sometimes). Will I do that? I don't know, hope not. Haven't gotten that far yet. I suppose that I'll be one of those that get's off... continues working out... eating right... but yes if I see myself fall into the same slump again with dramatic weight gain, I probably will get back on them again! Does that give me an excuse to slack off and rely on a pill? NO! They aren't cheap and I feel horrible when I don't work out! The point is to avoid being here again! Not exercising zaps my energy and makes my sleeping issues (light sleeper) return. But, IF NECESSARY, why wait until I have 100 lbs to lose again? It is a condition and you do have to manage it.
Bottom line is, you do what you have to do. If you have done the research and feel good about the medicine -- enough to say that is healthier to take it than to remain dangerously obese, good for you for doing something about it!!!
P.S. Just incase anyone is curious... I did spend 3 months in the last year without the rx while continuing to eat right and workout. Still lost weight during that time. I decided that b/c I had been on it for a year I wanted a 'break' for my own peace of mind and I did fine!
