I am 34 years old and I weigh 322 and am 5"6. I wear a size 28. I am generally a happy person who enjoys life and I feel pretty comfortable in my own skin. I want to lose weight because I know that my health is at risk. I understand what I am doing to my body but I can't stop eating. Its like a drug! I can control myself better in the morning but come evening I really get hungry. I know what I need to do to lose weight in a healthy life changing manner. I took nutrition classes and stress mangement classes in college in the past year and have discovered that to lose weight and keep it off there is simply no such thing as a short cut or special diet. Calories need to come down, portions need to be brought down, and exercise is a non negotiable!!!! I am a fricking expert! I helped my teenage daughter lose weight by helping her count her calories and packing her lunches with fruits and veggies and whole grains, lean meats, etc.... I taught her about controlling her portions and still being able to eat foods she loved but in moderation. She and I will exercise together when we have time as well, but I have found that I only exercise with her. She went down from 154 to 134 and from a size 13 to a size 9 in about 6 months. I am so proud of her I could burst! She has kept the weight off and I believe that she has made some good lasting lifestyle changes.
I know I can do it.. So why haven't I? I mean what is my frickin problem? I get motivated and then 2 hours later I cave! Arghhhh.
Any advice?

I know what you're saying. I can give myself the best pep talk in the world and be all motivated, then an hour later I'm shoving something in my mouth. It's a tough road. We have to re-commit ourselves to being healthy at every possible moment.

Suggestions? Well, I find I have to eat a little something at least every three hours or so, or I get light-headed and nauseous. If it's not mealtime, I'll have something like a celery stick with a tablespoon of reduced fat peanut butter, or one ounce of string cheese and a couple of triscuits. I try to eat it slowly, savor it, and pay attention to when I start feeling better. That is my pay off. Skip the sugary snacks when trying to raise your blood sugar and make it last for a couple of hours. As you probably already know, sugar will spike the insulin levels and then you'll "crash" and be hungrier than you were in the first place.

Also, I find 1/2 c. oatmeal with 1/4 cup dried cranberries or raisins and 1 cup 1% milk is a breakfast that sticks with me well and generally carries me through until lunch. Those complex carbs are our friends!

Good luck, I hope I helped a little.

I wish it was just about knowledge or I would've been at goal weight ages ago. I think a big key is to find your inner motivation.. something that really makes you want to do this. Not because you 'have' to lose the weight, but because you 'want' to lose the weight. Plus exercising your willpower and never givving up. Even if you slip up

I wanna say welcome to the board first off!...

On a serious note: I read your post and I heard myself talking. (I actually just finished eating a cheese sandwich for no apparent reason.)

Thank You! It is difficult to keep motivated especially when confronted with so many sweets. I need to get past that three day hump and detox myself from sweets. I did Atkins for a year and I lost 40 pounds in the first 3 months and then just maintained for about a year. I was impressed with myself at first though because I did not touch sweets for almost 6 months. By that time I found the taste of white bread disgusting and when I did have an occasional sweet I could only have a little because it tasted sooooo sweet. I became worried over time that I was consuming way too much artificial sweeteners though. I also realized I was still eating way too much food. I could eat a whole package of bacon for breakfast with a side of scrambed eggs. I am mortified now when I think about it. My eating habits have gotten a lot better since taking nutrition classes and learning that there is just no easy way out. Eat less and exercise! It is so simply said but not simply done.
Another problem I have is finding exercise that I like to do. I like walking but always seem to find excuses not to and there was a time I did water aerobics and I really liked it but it was expensive.
When I look back and read what I have written I just think, God, I am lazy!
