Sarah,
I think this is a great idea - I am pretty visual myself and over the years I've done a bunch of different things to help me track what/how I am doing - writing the days I go to the gym on a calendar, planning/tracking my food on pretty colored index cards. Each helps for a while - because I guess I get easily bored I keep trying different things. And I reward myself for effort, not results - I plan my workouts at the beginning of the week, and I praise and honor myself for meeting my committment, even when the scale doesn't recognize my hard work. Red and Green stars - I might have to go get some tomorrow...
I'm partly also responding to your 'Holiday struggles' post - just a thought - the very best gift you can give to your family is a happier, healthier you. If they have to choose between an expensive present you ran all over town for or you feeling like 'I rock', what do you think they would choose? Don't be afraid to put yourself on your to-do list - and can you incorporate exercise with family time - like a walk to see the lights in your neighborhood each night after supper? Maybe this year, the best present the people who love you could give you is to accept that you don't want to be stressed over the holidays and you're going to simplify?
Good luck and Happy Holidays whatever you decide.

I love this idea, Sarah! I'm a kindergarten teacher, so I know that visuals work great with kids...why not adults too? Why didn't I try this before? Then, after so many exercise stars or so many eating-right stars, I can have a little reward. Not food, of course, but something else that I've wanted. I'll have to make a list of reward choices. It used to be that I could buy myself anything I wanted (almost) but now that money is tighter, it might be very motivating to have a paperback novel or a DVD on my reward list. And things that don't cost money too; like a long bubble bath or spending some time drawing or a walk in the mountains.
Love it! Good luck to you, Sarah!

I like this idea too.
