I'm thinking about using two different colored stickers for my calendar in December.

Sarah,
I think this is a great idea - I am pretty visual myself and over the years I've done a bunch of different things to help me track what/how I am doing - writing the days I go to the gym on a calendar, planning/tracking my food on pretty colored index cards. Each helps for a while - because I guess I get easily bored I keep trying different things. And I reward myself for effort, not results - I plan my workouts at the beginning of the week, and I praise and honor myself for meeting my committment, even when the scale doesn't recognize my hard work. Red and Green stars - I might have to go get some tomorrow...

I'm partly also responding to your 'Holiday struggles' post - just a thought - the very best gift you can give to your family is a happier, healthier you. If they have to choose between an expensive present you ran all over town for or you feeling like 'I rock', what do you think they would choose? Don't be afraid to put yourself on your to-do list - and can you incorporate exercise with family time - like a walk to see the lights in your neighborhood each night after supper? Maybe this year, the best present the people who love you could give you is to accept that you don't want to be stressed over the holidays and you're going to simplify?

Good luck and Happy Holidays whatever you decide.

I love this idea, Sarah! I'm a kindergarten teacher, so I know that visuals work great with kids...why not adults too? Why didn't I try this before? Then, after so many exercise stars or so many eating-right stars, I can have a little reward. Not food, of course, but something else that I've wanted. I'll have to make a list of reward choices. It used to be that I could buy myself anything I wanted (almost) but now that money is tighter, it might be very motivating to have a paperback novel or a DVD on my reward list. And things that don't cost money too; like a long bubble bath or spending some time drawing or a walk in the mountains.

Love it! Good luck to you, Sarah!

Hey, that's a pretty good idea, I may have to steal it for myself too. I'll have to go buy stickers though, since the only ones I have right now all have penguins on them. And try not to feel discouraged, your ticker shows good progress, and you have the right attitude. Think about how good you'll feel when you hit every mini-goal you set. I don't know about you, but when I look at the ultimate goal, it's a little too overwhelming and I feel defeated, but when I look at all the little things I've accomplished so far I feel a lot better. Like when I get to buy a smaller pair of jeans, I love that feeling. When I bought my dress for the big formal charity thing next week, it was a lot smaller than I thought it would be, and it fits. All of these little things, when I sit and think about them, all make me feel better than any piece of cake ever did. And by the way, you do rock.
