Five More Minutes...

Each month I try to think of something 'different' to do to keep me interested on this long journey - and today is Dec 1...I was thinking that I needed to go get my stickers today for Sarah's calendar idea, and how that childlike thing was motivating me. Then I thought of how kids are always saying 'Five More Minutes' - You say 'Time to go' - They say 'Five More Minutes'. You say 'Time for Bed' - They say 'Five More Minutes' and that little time seems really rewarding for them.
So since this is the season for children, I thought I'd borrow 'Five More Minutes'. On top of whatever I would usually do for exercise each day, I'll find 'Five More Minutes' - ride the bike for 25 instead of 20; steal five minutes to walk at lunch; go up and down the stairs in my office building for five minutes - just a little extra on top of what I normally do. I figure if I do this every day from now until Christmas, thats more than two extra hours of exercise...which will make up for a little fudge and cookies...
So now I have my stickers - I walked at lunch to buy them - and I have the first exercise one on my calendar (I went to the gym, not just from the walk!) I have to wait until tomorrow for the food one - still a ways to go til bedtime!
Anyway, anyone else want to be childlike and play?
Or all you Moms out there, any other ideas of ways we can use kid-motivation to keep us in the healthy spirit?
Happy weekend everyone

That's a great idea! It can provide a bit of a boost for December.
Since you asked, one thing that my son always says when he's offered seconds: "No I've had enough". I sometimes wonder where he gets his good eating habits from.. definetly NOT from his parents LOL.. so I guess this month I'll also go for "No for seconds"
So you've bought your stickers already? I can't find any stickers I like (picky picky me LOL).. but I have to get them today because I intend to put 2 stickers on my calender today
Mary,
I did get stickers - I wanted red and green stars but after four stores I decided I was making myself crazy and settled for two different ornament shapes. Then I flirted with the idea of cutting a Christmas Tree out of construction paper to hold them - but I said 'Enough already' and I have four stickers on my calendar so far. I haven't exercised yet today but I haven't gone to bed yet... and I'm headed for a food sticker too...this is way more fun than it ought to be.
I love that your son knows when he is full. I don't know where along the way we lose that internal signal - maybe the first time we're told to 'clean our plate' and 'not waste food'. I try to remember it goes to 'waste' or to 'waist' and go with the first one if I can't save it for another meal - but it's hard when the food is something I like. Your beautiful little boy is smart too! I'll think of him when saying 'No thank you.'

One of my main motivations for losing weight is my kids. DD will be 3 in February and DS is 18 months.. When DS was born i weighed 342 lbs and at the beginning of this year i was 321 lbs.. I am now 279.. it is sooo much easier to run after them and PLAY with them.
Every night we (me and the kids) do "exercizes" i lay on the floor and i hold them above me and use them as my weights for bench press and to work out my tricepts.
DD weighs 32 lbs so i used her for the "bench press" and DS weighs 21 lbs and i used him for my tricepts.... i get the exercise i need and they laugh, and they count with me so it's educational as well. LOL....
Plus they love to go for rides in the stroller.

Sara,
That is so funny - I can just see you all living, loving and laughing...kids all clean in their pj's after baths and you thrusting them in the air!
I don't have children, so this tip is not an option for me - I'm pretty sure none of the people whose kids I love would loan them to be used as free weights!
But I love the idea - My gym isn't that competetive, but I can just hear it 'I bench pressed 35 pounds!' 'So what, I bench pressed a three year old!'
And the degree of difficulty goes up as they grow...built in progress.
Thanks for the great mental image!
