Dani!
Welcome to 'the ones'....Yeah - Yeah - Yeah!!!

I was wondering if your heritage is Swedish? I'm half a Swede, and the food is a part of our holiday traditions...so I know it will take planning and willpower to focus on other things - like the love you have for your son - and maybe things like music and holiday movies and stories- and I KNOW you can do it!

In case you are Swedish, I'll wish you an early 'God Jul'.

Dani,
My Dad still has cousins in Sweden. Two years ago, we had an incredible family reunion is Sweden. It was so wonderful to have the people from both sides of the Atlantic together. My Dad had never been with all of his cousins at the same time, and the pictures still bring tears of joy to me.

Growing up, we always had our big celebraton on Christmas Eve with the whole smorgasbord -sill(pickled herring), cheese, hardtack, hard boiled eggs, meatballs, ham, brown beans, and finishing with rice pudding and after presents, glogg made from an old family recipe (for the non-Swedes, glogg is a punch made from red wine, 200 proof alchohol, beer, raisins, orange peel, spices, and then set on fire with sugar burned into it. You get the best sleep of the year on Christmas Eve) We haven't made lutfisk since my grandfather died in 1964 - and no one misses it! As people hae married in to the family, we've added some American dishes because amazingly, not everyone likes pickled herring!

While we were eating, the tomtes (little elves) came on goats and brought our presents - and we left the food on the table for them to take back for their party later.

Now we go to my Dad's sometime between Christmas and New Year's and have 'Swedish Christmas'. My step-mother loved the tradition of hiding an almond in the rice pudding, and she would always try to rig it so that the person most likely to get married or have a baby would get it. She died five years ago and we always mention her and talk about that when we get to that course.

I think what you call lefse we maybe call platter - little tiny pancakes? We don't have those at Christmas, but they were a special Sunday night supper that my Dad would cook and still does.

And since this is a diet board, I won't even mention the cookies and pastries...

But I love the music - again when I was little the grownups used to dance around the tree on Christmas Eve - probably the high spirits from glogg. We don't dance now, but we always talk about it...

Wishing you joy!
