New and need support

Hello all. I am new to this meesage board and I am looking for help. I am very overweight and have about 150 pounds to lose to get to my goal weight. To tell you the truth I would just be happy to be in the 100's whatever the number is. I have realistic goals and I know tha tit will take a lot of hard work. I havehad problems in the past with my weight. When I was 14 I began suffering from anorexia and bulimia. I came within the last few days of my life in a short time frame because I suffered from both at the same time. I have come a long way since then but my weight is out of control I know I am near or over 300 (can't bear to face the scale but will have to soon.)I have two kids and a husband and I want to be healthier not only for myself but for them. I also recently lost my dad this past Jan. and he was overweight and that played a role in his death. He was only 46 and I am now 24. I hate to think of already being middle aged by my dad's lifespan. I have tried many different programs to lose weight. Most recently I tried Weight Watchers and I did well. But I have a hard time staying with it. I am thinking about trying it again and hope for the best, but with two young kids the money begins to become an issue. I am open for any tips and advice. Most of all I am looking for support. My husband doesn't have a weight problem ( he is the kind of guy who can lose 10 pounds by standing up.. I hate him for that lol) Any tips on how to buy foods for me and not go over my tight budget? Any recipes that I can make that is healthy and good for losing weight but something that the family may eat? Funny weight doesn't take long to put on but takes a long time to take off. Hope to hear from you soon. Good luck to all. Keep reaching for your goals. Take care.

Hi Tammy and welcome to the board. You've come to the right place and the ladies here are very helpful and will help you every step of the way.
I am happy that you are taking the right step again to loose weight. You want to be there for your kids and husband. You should be proud of yourself for doing that!
The following are just suggestions you can use. If you haven't already, I would decide on how many calories a day you would like to eat. Right now I am on a 1500 calorie diet. I measure out my foods by the serving size and record them in journal, the amount of calories, the serving size and what was it that I ate. It helps me look at the plan much better. Instead of using sugar on my cereal, I use one packet of splenda and it's just like sugar! It's wonderful in my opinion! I also use skim milk.
Do you have a slow cooker? Well if you do, a wonderful cookbook to get is Fix It and Forget it Lightly. It has hundreds of receipes that you can use for your slow cooker. I got my copy off of half.com for less than $7.00. Or you could try ebay. That's if you do any online shopping.
Exercise is also important which I'm sure you know. I walk every where I go because I live in a small town and everything is accessable by walking.
Something else you could try is the book You On A Diet by Dr. Oz, who is featured on Oprah. You can get that book off of half.com or ebay or at your local wal-mart, k-mart or even best buy.
So I hope this helps! Good luck and your heading in the right direction!
Susan
Hi Tammy,
Welcome to the board! I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my dad in March and for me it was a wake up call of a different sort. I'm 44 with a DD 5 and DS 7 and my dad was 80. He was in great health but caught a rare viral infection I was not ready to lose him and couldn't help thinking that I was on a path to very poor health if I didn't change things.
Regarding food tips, my best suggestion is to avoid processed food and incorporate lots of fruits and veggies into your diet. I also keep canned vegetables around and add a can of green beans or yellow beans or spinach to whatever I've cooked for my family.
Good luck on your journey! Annie
So sorry to hear about your dad. I think it's absolutly great of you to want to be healthier for your DH, your children AND for yourself. Here's to starting your healthier life this year!
As for tips and advice, drink lots of water first and foremost. It's good for you, flushes the system and I find I don't eat nearly as much if I drink water before eating. Exercise is also very important. Try getting your kids involved. I know you said they are both young. If they are of age to be steady walking, take short walks with them (bring the stroller for when they get tired. Or you can just put on some music and DANCE with them! If they are younger, you can use your baby as a resistance weight. For example, lie on the ground with your knees bent and baby lying face down on your tummy with head up near yours. Slowly lift baby up into the air, bring down for a kiss and then back up again. Warning: don't do this after baby has just eatten ;0)
While diet is important, make sure you don't cut back too much on the calories. This is particularly important since you have a history of anorexia and bulimia (so do I). Remember that if you eat too few calories, your body goes into starvation mode which causes your matabolizim to slow down. This results in your body hoarding all the calories and trying it's damnedest to keep you from losing weight. Neither anorexia or bulimia are healthy lifestyles. You want to be healthy for yourself and your family so you can be around for them for a long time to come.
Best wishes for the New Year! We're all here for support.

Welcome Tammy!
First of all I am so sorry that you lost your Dad! I can understand how that would encourage you to lose weight so you can be around your children and family for as long as possible.
My DH weighs 135-140 pounds and eats soooooooooooooooo much and I hate that, lol. He is VERY active though (runs daily with the Army). My goal is to run a 5 Mile race with him some time during 2007. He is coming home to me in 2 months and I can't wait!!!
I look forward to getting to know you better.
