Too High Expectations???

Okay, I want to set a goal for my weight loss this year. My highest weight was 310 and my present weight is 282. I want to get down to approx. 145 lbs eventually. Is a goal of 50+ lbs for the whole year realistic? I know that a rate of 1-2 pounds per week is considered good. So if there are 52 weeks in a year then wanting to lose at least 50 lbs is realistic isn't it? Considering my medical issues I didn't want to go for 2 lbs per week which would be 104 lbs for the year. I have a tendency to set my goals too high and then always fail to reach them. Figured I should get some feedback so I know I'm not overshooting. Thanks

Dee

Dee,

I am shooting for 50 lbs this year too so for both our sakes I hope it isn't overshooting. I don't think it is, it is a little less than a lb a week and I don't think we would have to change much to lose that much! Drink water, eat a little better, and maybe increase our steps. When I can walk from the parking lot to the office without getting out of breath I think I may even start taking the stairs instead of the elevator that way I can increase my steps/exercise just a tad!! So I think/hope 50 lbs in 1 year is a good goal to have if you need/want to start slowly like me! I wish you the best of luck!!

You've had great success so far, so why not 50? It's a healthy rate and if you miss by 5 lbs ... who cares.

Let me tell you a story about last New Years! I went to see the Physcians Assistant at my Gynecologists office for my annual exam. She's discussing my weight as part of the exam ... I'm okay with this ... I am who I am. I was talking about how I had made some small changes and was going to make a new change every few weeks and I was looking to loose 40 lbs for the year. She said that really wasn't realistic and she said I should try for 20 ... well I really was crushed. Ended up gaining 15 lbs last year ... not entirely because I felt defeated, but it sure blew the wind out of my sails for the January start and I didn't loose anything and then ended up traveling extensively for work and the poor eating did me in for 15 extra.

I say aim high ... Plus the 1 lb per week is immediate feedback ... if it's not happening, you need to change something in your routine.

So go for it!

I think that is a realistic goal. I lost 50 pounds in a little over a year. It gives you a chance to make changes at your own pace, and losing it a reasonable pace helps you to keep it off and keep doing the things that are working for you. Walking was the best and easiest excerise for me. I now walk a minimum of 20 miles a week and I feel great!

I think 50 pounds is a great goal for one year. I would love to do it with you. I am 34 years old I also want to loss about the same amount. I am 300 now and my overall goal is 130 pounds. I need to take it one day at a time. I want to loss 50 this year. I am going to take it one month at a time and re-evaluate it on a monthly basis. If you loss more the the 4 pounds one month thats great. but if you don't make the 4 pounds don't blame yourself just keep writing and I would love to support you.

I don't think that your expectations are too high; however what are you going to do to lose weight? Are you on a weight loss program or are you cutting back?
When you start on this journey; allow days that you are not going to be perfect.
I am in your corner...go for it and enjoy the ride. Remember; often times when we lose weight emotions surface and you may want to seek professional help (maybe one session a month with a therapist) just to process. Good luck; love Susan

I weigh about 225 and I don't want to get up to 250 which is the highest I've ever been. I think aiming for one to two pounds weight loss per week at the most is a good goal because when I was on Weight Watcher's that was a good goal. Sometimes I stayed the same and sometimes I lost 1/4 to 1/2 pound per week. They always clap when you lost weight, and the leader encourages you to reward yourself with a new blouse or something. Even if it's a cup of coffee out with your friend or husband it can be rewarding.

I have a lot of medical issues that prevent me from doing much physical activities. I do have a treadmill, but haven't been using it much lately because every time I get on it, I end up sitting on the floor, trying not to pass out (I have a brain-heart disorder that causes a rapid drop in blood pressure for no reason). My doctor said that when I get dizzy, I should sit or lie down ASAP so I don't pass out. I decided, therefore, to get a recumbent bike. That way, I'm already sitting down and if I do pass out, it's not as far down to the ground ;0) Hopefully I'll get my bike within the next month - lord knows where we can put it though.

I have already drastically changed my diet which has helped me lose about 32 pounds so far. I'm working on increasing my water intake as I generally don't drink nearly enough. The water war is helping with that. Go Red Team!
