I'm New and Nervous

Hi! I just watched my taped Today and saw the ladies on about ivillage and the challenge, so I thought I'd check it out. I am a third grade teacher (for 25 years) in s. Ohio and need to lose in excess of 100 lbs....probably more like 130 lbs. or more. I am a grandma of 3 beautiful grandkids and want to live to see them grow up. I know my time is up for fooling around with this terrible excess weight. I welcome any suggestions. I find that low fat works best for me. I love veggies and don't eat much meat. I am not married and live with my little dog, Ajay. Maybe I eat because of loneliness????? I don't really know. I don't feel depressed. I don't feel sad. I am very concerned about this weight, but it doesn't seem to make me stick on a good food plan. I don't exercise much, except for going out to recess with my class and walking them to and from places. I know it's not enough. Anyway, I plan to make it this time. I feel like I have a new resolve. Maybe these boards will help!

Hello. I just wanted to welcome you and say that you found a great place to post during your weight loss journey. I wish you all the luck and hope that you will post often.

Welcome from a fellow teacher! I'm in S. California and subbing right now, but hope to have my own class again soon. Kindergarten is my thing; they keep me on my toes, lol.
You sound like you're ready to begin this long undertaking! You've found a great board; my first suggestion would be to start reading all the posts. There's great experience and ideas here.
I can relate to eating out of loneliness/boredom. Do you take your dog for walks? That's one way to get away from the kitchen. Also, you could revive your favorite hobbies and work on things you've been putting off...of course, this would be "do as I say, not as I do," as I have at least 5-6 cross-stitching projects that have never gotten finished! You could also do some sort of volunteer work or join a social club to get yourself out of the house and meeting new people. Just a few ideas, but I'm sure you can come up with what works for you!
I wish you the best and I look forward to getting to know you!

Welcome :) and don't be nervous :) this is the start of something new and exciting for you. There are so many different ways that we all lose weight, finding the right one for you is what will help your confidence. All of us know - eat right and exercise... makes me want to roll my eyes. I don't think there are people more informed about nutrition than us. - lol. But it can be daunting when we look at how far we have to go.
Our problem is getting the courage to just do it. However, what I have found that worked for me, especially in the beginning, is not look at how far I had to go. In the beginning, I didn't even really set a long term goal, it was the 10 lb goal that I was doing, first under 300 - then under 289 then 279 - well you get the idea. It wasn't until I got complete control and made my new eating habits part of my life that I looked at what ultimate goal I wanted.
I am so happy you found us :) Together we are soo much more stonger and positive. Anything, any of us are going thru with our weightloss or our life, is understood by at least one other person on here.
Welcome aboard the healthy wagon :)

Hi there. I am also new to the board, you will find a lot of great support and information here. That's great that you know that low-fat works for you. I have a really hard time with low fat, due to the sugars you are still allowed. I am doing a low carb/atkins diet to break my sugar addiction! I look forward to getting to know you and hope to see you around!
Thanks, Mary! I play with my dog but don't walk him right now....too wet outside. I don't do enough real exercise. That's one of my GREAT intentions....I keep thinking "Maybe this week." The kids at school keep me on my toes, at least. I'm going to try moving more at school. Seems I'm drained by the time I get home every day. I've subbed in Kindergarten years ago....not my cup of tea, I don't think. My grandson is in Kindergarten now. Hope you have a good week!

Thanks, Kim! I find that I can't look at the whole picture or it scares me too much. I'm going to take it slowly and be proud of myself for small successes. I've done well for the past week, eating low-fat but still eating a little too much of it. No snacks or sweets, though, so I'm glad of that, at least! Good luck to you!

Thanks for your reply. I hope I can figure out the boards soon....I just found out how to get back to my posting. I have a nephew who has great success on Atkins...it works great for him. I think we just have to find out what works for us. Good luck with your plan...I know we can do this!
