Any suggestions for someone who doesn't like veggies and not too many fruits but loves sugar? I don't eat the skins of fruits. So it's usually easier to grab something else instead of peeling an apple. Is fruit in heavy syrup as bad as candy? Is canned fruit good at all?

Good morning, Lady! No, fruit in heavy syrup is not a good thing, though I'm not sure it's as bad as candy. I use canned fruit occasionally, but only if it's packed in it's own juice. Start reading the nutritional info on the cans and you can see what the differences are.
Suggestions? Leafy, green salads with meat/cheese toppings are good; they kind of disguise the vegetable experience for me. The biggest help has been cutting out all the junk food; when I ate whatever, my fruits and veggies sometimes went bad before I could eat them too. But being really hungry at mealtime helps those veggies taste so much better. Start with ones you know you like, for example 1/2 c. cooked carrots (fresh are so much better than canned!) or something else. Then branch out and try different ones. I've rediscovered a love for baby brussels sprouts; I buy a bag of frozen every week - they're great with a tiny bit of margarine on them. One way I like fresh green beans is to blanch them, then stir-fry them in a couple of teaspoons of olive oil and garlic or garlic powder. Garlic makes everything taste good! Check out the light sour cream too; a tablespoon of that might taste good on veggies and it's much lower in fat/calories than the regular.
Also tell yourself that your body is happy to be getting its fruits and veggies. You are nourishing your muscles, bones, brain and every other cell of your body. Imagine your body thanking you for feeding it the right foods. I know mine is very grateful when I don't just listen to my mouth!
Hope this helps!

My advice would be to try new veggies you haven't tried before,I recommend going to allrecipes.com to learn new recipes for vegetables. Vegetables are so important for your body, especially non starchy vegetables, like broccoli & lettuce! I do romaine lettuce b/c I don't care for spinach too much and iceburg doesn't have has many health benefits. Try celery with peanut butter or cream cheese. Cucumbers with a little vinegar and salt and pepper is one of my favs. Roasted vegetables (a little olive oil and s & p) are a delicious meal idea.
I know a lot of the canned fruits are loaded with sugars, but the Dole Peaches are really good, I think you can get them in a low sugar version as well. Have you tried dried fruits? Dried cherries are one of my favs.
I love veggies, but am not so into fruit! I have been eating applesauce with no sugar added. I figure it's better than nothing! I got a berry flavored one and it is really good!
Just a thought!
unsweetened applesauce tastes like heaven to me (I sprinkle a bit of extra cinamon).. and sometimes even heat it in the microwave a bit first (just to make it warm)..
Berries!! No need to peal and low in calories.. it's almost sinful with cool whip
I love veggies but don't like fruit - so I'm kinda with you.
As for fruit - try buying one of the pre-cut fruit "wheels" at the store for parties. I know they cost more, but if you value your health it is worth it. Minor pennies...
That way you can just grab fresh, not canned, fruit and go. Try sprinkling something on them as well -maybe some granola (just a little) to get a mixture of flavor.
Or try putting some in a low fat yogurt. Strawberries in yogurt - yum.
Veggies you can also try the same - those veggie wheels. But if you don't like what is in the wheel - it won't help. Also be careful of the "dips" - make sure you get low fat if you feel the need to dip!
