Hi Im Heather. Im 32 and live in the Houston, TX area. Weight has always been a struggle for me but this past year has just pushed it over the top. I have 2 daughters, 3 and 1. My youngest was diagnosed at birth with Cystic Fibrosis and spent nearly 5 months in the hospital. The stress of it all just really broke me. I had gestational diabetes and its heavy on all sides of my family so its something I really need to watch.
I decided to weigh yesterday - something I havent done since having the baby. After a near meltdown at the scale I decided I better find some support system or there would be no way to do it. I want to lose 150-175 lbs. Im not even sure what "plan" i want to follow. My first thing to do was start cutting out soda. Im gonna be in such a bad mood this week without it. HAHA

Hi Heather,

Welcome to the board! You should be really proud that you made the tough decision to do something about your health. Honestly, it's easier to just look the other way and focus on your kids. Losing the soda is a great start. Hope to see you around a lot and to share the ups and downs with you along the way! All the best, Annie 252/233/156

Heather....You can do it, remeber one day at a time. I was a vrey heavy soda drinker and it has been over a month since I have had a soda. I do not miss it. I have 100 pouns to lose and have lost 15 since Jan 8th. I feel better, my clothes are getting baggy and I wore a pair of jeans which I could only zip laying on the bed, I zipped them while standing up and they are not tight on my legs! For me it is the little accomplishments that make me feel good.

Welcome.

Good luck giving up soda. I very rarely have soda anymore, and I don't miss it at all.

My nephew has CF. But he wasn't diagnosed for quite a while, the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him..he had a rash all over and couldn't gain weight it was really bad! So on the bright side for you at least it was caught early so you knew what was going on.

Good for you for taking the 1st step. I can't even imagine how rough it has been to have a child with Cystic Fibrosis.. You must be one "tough cookie" as my 3 yr old DD like to say. I have also have an 20 month old son.

The best advise I can give you it to take small steps to improving your life/health. not drinking soda is a good start, but be careful going cold turkey cause the sudden lack of caffine may give you headaches.. (I was a coffee-holic.. used to drink about 2 pots a day and went cold turkey...)

other small steps you could take would be to just limit your portions.. for instance.. i started out by just not having a 2nd helping of food.. i just put my food on my plate and once i was done, i didnt' get anymore. once you get used to that you can start to limit your portion sizes to "normal"

and try to drink as much water as possible.

good luck

Welcome to the board Heather, and congratulations on taking the first steps. Admitting that you have to do something about your weight and actually starting (or restarting after a lapse) is always the hardest part IMO.

Giving up soda is a great start. You'll be saving lots of calories on those. I was a huge soda drinker and now I rarely have my "fix", I even weaned myself off diet soda and just drink water. It isn't easy, but once done, you never miss the stuff. You can also think about other steps to take, like cutting down on junk food and take out (and it's really nice for the pocket too LOL), or reducing the amount of fried foods you eat, and so on.

Wishing you all the luck on your weight loss. Post often and keep us updated. Looking forward to knowing you better
