I talked with my doctor today!

Hello Everyone:

I called my doctor's office today and set up an appointment to meet with him this afternoon, because this calorie counting thing has me in tears, literally! I talked with my doctor and explained to him that I am counting calories for everything I eat and I start to panic if I don't have very many calories left to eat dinner. My doctor looked over my medical chart and we have decided to change the course of action here! My doctor wants me to watch my portions and measure out my food, drinks, etc instead of counting the calories. My doctor said that I could eat all of the fresh fruits, vegetables, and salads without the dressing, bacon,or cheese on it,and I would do ok. My doctor explained to me that he doesn't want me going below 1800 calories a day because I am only 35 years old and still of childbearing age.So starting tomorrow,I just watch the portions, eat sensibly, and of course do cardio exercise five times a week for 30 minutes to start out with.I have also been using five pound weights on my arms to help tighten and help my arms look better and it has really helped by lifting the five pound weights,YAY!! ;-)

I also talked to my DH and we had a LONG talk about how I felt that I wasn't getting any support from him or the family and I explained to him that this wasn't a,"Phase,"that I am going through, this is a new healthy, lifestyle for all of us! Believe it or not,my DH apologized and now he has banned all sweets from the house and we have restocked the house with better treats such as fruit, yogurt, veggies, animal crackers,etc... My DH and my DD have said that they are looking forward to becoming healthier too,so I guess my talk with him made him realize just how important our health really is!! Thank you all for all of your support,I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. I would like to wish all of you the best of luck on your weight loss goals, and I will always be here for anybody that needs to vent, cry,or just talk!! ((((HUGS TO EVERYONE))))) snuggle_bunnie99 a.k.a. Tamara ;-)

Awesome that your family is on board! I think you'll find it less stressful now that you talked this out with DH and your Dr. Good Luck!

Hi Snugglebunnie, Thanks for replying to my message. I'm wondering why you have to have your salads with no dressing. There are many healthy dressings in the stores, I pulled two out of my fridge now, one is Wish Bone Light, Creamy Caesar. It has only 50 cal 20 fat cal per 2 tablespoons. Only 7 carbs(not the worst). I have another chunky blue cheese from Wishbone Fat free, 35 cal, no fat cal, 7 carbs. I could go on and on because my fridge is full of salad dressing. I eat alot of salads on South Beach Diet. I hope you get support from your family, if not I'm here! I put my whole family on the diet with me. They can use shedding a few pounds. Especially Hubby. I have two boys 11 and 13. We were all on the S.Beach diet a few years ago and we did wonderful on it. We constantly amazed our friends, every time they saw us we were smaller. We would all lose about 3 to 5 pounds a week with NO exercise! You know how everbody is looking for their miracle pill to get skinny, well S.Beach was our miracal pill. Its just a matter of sticking to it. I work as a receptionist so I get No exercise. Did you say your using hand weights? Do you go to the gym or exercise at home. I think I'll stop at the library and pick up some exercise videos to do at home. I can never seem to make time for the gym. Talk to you again soon, Kathy

Hi Kathy:

Actually,my doctor does allow me to use salad dressings on my salad, the only problem is that I really like the really rich and creamy dressings that are just loaded with calories!! Thank you for telling me about the lower fat and lower calorie dressings out on the market because to tell you the truth,I didn't even know that there were lower calorie and lower fat salad dressing options out there. I will definetely have to check these dressings out, thank you for telling me about these!! ;-) I have heard of the South Beach Diet, but I have never tried it myself. My doctor does allow me to have GOOD CARBS in my diet such as whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread,etc... If I eat one BAD carb,it is not good news, because once I get a taste of white bread, regular pasta,I can just eat,and eat and eat.

It sure sounds like you and your family had alot of success with the South Beach Diet,WAY TO GO!! I think the hardest things for families to understand when we want to change our lifestyles and eat better and healthier is they are resistant to change. They think that they can never have another piece of cake again,or another doughnut again and that cannot be further from the truth! Did you know that when some people try to drastically reduce their calorie intake, that the body signals the brain that it is going into famine mode which means that the body will hold onto every single calorie that you eat,so you won't starve to death? That is why my doctor and I changed my diet plan because by me counting my calories non-stop,I was just reduced to tears and frustration!! :-( My doctor told me that if I eat sensibly, exercise and have a treat IN MODERATION,that I will lose weight in a healthy fashion?? It is true,I am allowed to have a SMALL piece of cake once in awhile or a SMALL BOWL of ice cream,as long as I go right back to my diet,do cardio exercises for 30 minutes a day or more if I can, and eating sensibly!

I cannot afford a gym membership in our city because it costs a fortune,so I just purchased two, five pound dumb bells, and I work out with those right in my own home! One of the health and exercise experts that I really like to work out with is Denise Austin, because she motivates you and she shows you alternatives to exercises in case you start to feel really tired or fatigued. Denise has been in the exercise business for many years, and I remember seeing her videos out in the stores when I was a teenager. Anyway,I like the fact that she offers ALOT of different exercises for your exercise needs such as upper body, lower body,arms,legs,etc... I also like the fact that in her videos she is always saying,"You can do it,"and she talks in a nice soft tone, she isn't yelling or screaming at the camera. I just go to my local library and rent her exercise videos and I usually can rent them out for two weeks. I hope this has been helpful and if you ever need to talk, cry, vent or just need support, there are alot of wonderful, caring people on this message board! I try to come on here as often as I can,and I wish you the best of luck in you and your family's weight loss goals!! (((HUGS)))) snuggle_bunnie99 a.k.a. Tamara ;-)
