Welcome

first of all you need to explore your options, what will work for you. you need a plan that you can live with the rest of your life, making it not a diet but a lifestyle change.

you need to incorporate exercise, drinking water, planning and preplanning and journaling keeping a very close eye on portion sizes.

i personally did WW and find it very easy now to life the program.

good luck

Starting is the hard part - of course, so is continuing - but 'the longest journey starts with a single step, and this is a long journey.

For me, this has all been about small changes, a lot of them, but small. It has taken me four years to get where I am, but it is lasting...

A lot of people start with walking - 20 minutes a day, and then adding in other things. I started by joining a gym, committing to going three times a week, but I was already a big walker so I needed something else. The important thing is to find thngs you like to do and determine how to fit them to your life.

This board is filled with people who alternate between drinking water and running to the bathroom - 64 to as much as 128 ozs a day. I drink my water, but I'm not too good at the facts of it. There have been a lot of threads with information about how much is enough if you are interested.

And then food changes - a lot of people have success with journaling, both to see what you are eating and to gain some control. Dropping the amount of soda seems like another place a lot of people start. For others, a full out change with stricter limits to lessen the choices seems to work - weight watchers or even diets from doctors or nutritionists. I started by not having chips with my lunch, then started eating five salad meals a week. The food is the hardest part for me and I am still looking for the 'perfect' way of eating for me - I think of it as eating on a plan, not as 'being on a diet' because for me, this is a life changing journey, not something with an end.

Best wishes on finding what works for you.

Welcome aboard!!

Starting (or re-starting) is always the hardest part for me. First off, I think you need to decide whether you prefer to follow a formal plan (like WW's, etc), or make your own plan. Some people prefer to follow something already outlined for them, while others prefer to change the way they're eating slowly. If you'd rather do your own thing, then the best place to start is to journal. Start off by writing everything you eat (with quantities) and how much activity you're getting. If you can write a small comment on why you ate (ex. I ate this because I was bored) it would be great. Then have a look at 3-4 days of

You did start!!! You came here! Honestly, for me it was hard to admit to myself that I have so much weight to lose. In my mind I didn't act fat or live fat or dress fat. My DH and family didn't and still don't treat me differently because of my size, and I never stopped feeling good about myself because of it. Still, I kept denying how fat I really was. Coming here and staying here was like "outing" myself which now seems pretty funny to me. I was walking around as if no one would notice my size 22 butt in my size 22 jeans!

Anyway, there are lots of diets to follow and all are more effective with exercise, but for me I know I'm on plan when I admit to myself that I have to live today differently because I'm so fat.

Best of luck and welcome aboard!

Angela,
Don't sell yourself so short! You've been reading and posting on this board longer than I have. I KNOW for a fact you've learned stuff.

Plus you HAVE lost weight and your efforts have been genuine. You know I love ya dearly, BUT, that was a total cop out response and I'm call you on the carpet on that one. You are doing awsome at water and you've LOST weight. Maybe not rapidly, but you HAVE LOST IT!!! Give yourself a pat on the back for what you HAVE accomplished, not for what you haven't. You've given me so much encouragement and support and I know that brain of yours is filled with knowledge. And an extra pat on the back for NOT GIVING UP!!

Well, so far you've had some good responses. Everyone talks about plans. Most people aren't as hard core about "plans" as me, so I'm gonna give my speach. And please keep in mind, I know everyone is different and whatever you choose to do is up to you. So here it goes:

In my opinion if you don't have a plan of some sort you are setting yourself up for failure. No, be it a plan you design yourself, or a plan like Weight Watchers or through a nutrionist, or whatever, you need a plan. Without a plan, how are you going to get to your goal? Every goal requires a plan. It doesn't magically happen.

With that said, I'll say this: If I need to lose over 100 pounds, what makes me think I'm capable of designing my own plan? Honestly, I believe you need to either do one of two things. Pick a plan that has been proven to work already, there's lots of them out there. They all work IF you stick to them. The only ones that don't are the ones you don't follow. The other option is to go the calorie counting route. You know consume less than you burn. Either route you take, journaling is good. First, it keeps you honest with yourself as to what you're eating. Second, and most important in my opinion, is then if your efforts aren't working, you can look at your food choices and make the proper adjustments.

Welcome to the board. I'm usually not so agressive, but I'm on a plan through my Dr. and it's the first time my efforts have worked. I've lost 103 pounds since June and have 60 - 70 left to go. So, I love plans. But everyone is different. One thing is certain, this is a great board and you'll learn alot and get alot of support and encouragement.
