Welcome

you have come to the right place for help and support.

you probably have all the tools, one of the most important to keep you going is journaling and remembering to write it before biting it and being accountable. You also need to keep moving as much as possible. i personally use a pedometer and really aim for my 10,000 steps and most days do 11,000. you also need to keep drinking water as well as making healthy choices. Keep only healthy foods in the house, no trigger foods, and your kids and grand kids don't need the junk.

(your grandchildren are adorable - I am a few years older than you and have 3½ grandchildren- losing the weight will help you with them as well)

hope you will post often.

WELCOME ABOARD. I wish you the most success. I understand 100% about the revving and then shutting down as that is exactly how I have been!!

We can do this though!! I just know we can.

These gals are great about keeping you going and giving support!! That is why I am still here trying after a year of trying and not losing. Not giving up this time.

Shirley,
Welcome! A lot of people who post here are young - I am too -51! Not married, no kids(I don't regret that but I think I would be an awesome grandparent-fortunately I have nieces and nephews to shower with love)

Even without a common age, I think most of us find something in common with other posters here-besides the weight/food struggles. Whether you need hugs or tough love or cheering on, someone usually has the right words to help you stay on the weight loss journey. And we find a lot to laugh about - so this can be the right place for you if you are ready for the adventure.

Besy wishes on your journey.

Welcome aboard Chirley,

I think what you're facing is something we all face here. Because we have a lot of weight to lose, our journey is expected to be a long one... and it's not easy to be motivated all the time. Many of us have fallen off the wagon and joined back.. I think relapces are only natural. The key issue is to get back on track and keep trying again. As long as we keep trying, we can never fail. I just returned from a huge relapse myself and trying to lose some serious weight before summer.

Glad you're joining us. Please post often

Shirley,

I'm glad you found us! This is a hard thing to accomplish alone and it truly helps to be around other people who aren't just our size, but are working on losing. I'm personally working on a permanent life change, and that takes time because as you pointed out there is "knowing" what to do and "living" what you know you should do. Not a big intellectual problem, huh? Please don't get hung up on age. This is a really diverse group in many, many ways! (I'm 44 with a 7 yo and a 5 yo making me an old mom with a ton in common with you young grandmas!)

Wishing you all the best and hoping to see lots of you around the board!

Annie

Hi Shirley!! I may not have age in common with you but I do share your location, sort of. I am in Alaska's interior, Fairbanks to be exact. I don't think spring is ever going to come this year. We are still in the -15 to -20 at night but are finally getting some above zero temps during the day. I am ready to get out and do some out door activities. Welcome to the board. I am 5 months in to my journey and have lost 49 lbs, I still get discouraged and have set backs but you just have to pick yourself up and dust yourself off and keep going, this is a change for life.

Hi Shirley
What a treat to meet someone in their 50's! I'm 59. I started out at 330 pounds and I am currently at 292 pounds so don't fret, it will come off. I've been on a "get healthy" journey since 1/15/07. In that time I have lost just about 38 pounds. What got me started? I want to be around for a long, long time and spend some quality retirement years with my husband (at around 70 ha) and when my son finally has children be around for them. So why is this time going to be different from all the other times (and I am talking 30+ times at weight loss tries)? Because I am doing this for myself and not for anyone else. Because my goal is to get healthy (long term) and not to fit in an airplane seat for a trip to Las Vegas or fit into a size 18 for a wedding (short term). I don't know about you, but all my other weight loss tries were efforts based on an event/activity which required me to be a certain size. I was always very successful and met my goal, but I never stayed at my goal weight because I always thought of it (not consciously maybe) as a temporary (short term) situation, not one that I would have to continue for the rest of my life. I don't focus on the 150+ pounds I need to lose to get to my goal of being healthy, I just focus on staying on my eating plan one-day-at-a-time. I just focus on walking 30 minutes a day. I have mini-goals, of course, but my ultimate goal is to get healthy. That's how I see myself, healthy, full of energy, enjoying life more and that's what I will become. However, until you find a real reason to lose weight and commit to it, you'll continue to be in the "procrastination state" (knowing what needs to be done, but not doing it). The only one who is going to find that reason to lose weight is you. The only one who can start eating healthy is you. The only one to start exercising is you. (You could dig the treadmill out if it was really important to you. Only you can decide if it is.) We all need encouragement to continue when the dieting gets tough (i.e. plateaus hit, results don't come as fast as we would like, etc.), but bottom line you have control over you. Be kind to yourself when you stumble. I forgive myself when I backslide and move forward. Decide what changes in your life are important to you that will take you to where you want to be. You will succeed once you make up your mind to do so. Life requires we experience hard work, sacrafice, comfort, disappointment, joy, laughter, tears, anger, fear, contentment, peace, etc... so we learn the big lesson that life is about how we respond to our experiences. We may not be in control of anything else that life dishes out(work, commuting, school, our kids especially them ha, etc..)but we are in control of our responses and actions. So, once again, be kind to yourself (you certainly are to others), forgive yourself when you don't meet your own expectations (we certainly forgive others) and welcome to success at losing weight. (When you decide that is what you really want to do.)

I'm new here too, so don't worry about that! These ladies are very welcoming and friendly...and who cares about age? Age ain't nothin' but a number baby! I tend to get along with people who are older than me vs. my age better anyway...I'd rather hang out with my adopted Gramma than some of my friends!

You'll find lots of good advice and good people to talk to. This is a great place. And cheaper than a gym, too! Share your accomplishments (and failures) and we'll back you 100%...what are friends for!

PS: Grandkids...too cute!
