Mary,
Oh yes, those starving children in India...how many of them have we saved by cleaning our plates? Oh yea, none...

Good for you for learning to say 'No thank you' to other people's left overs. If they bought a fabulous handbag by a famous designer and then decided black was't their color-OK. If they made cookies at home and packaged some nicely because they knew you would love them and wanted to do something special for you-OK. Because they don't want to 'kill' the starving children in India so they'll let you do their dirty work-I don't think so.

I try to remember that it can go to 'waste' or to 'waist' and let it hit the trash.

If it makes you feel better, each time you resist, take a nickel out of your wallet and put it in a jar, and every few months, send a check to some food charity...that will really help the starving children..and let you see how many times you put yourself first!

Best wishes

Great going with avoiding those bacon strips.

And what's up with the starving children story? I never really thought about it when I was young, but how could my obesity problems help with starving children? I don't see a connection.

Mary,
In America, little children who don't clean their plate are told 'Eat your dinner-there are starving children in India who would be happy to have that to eat' Its a threat that contributes to our obesity epidemic...

I don't know if all parents do it, but like our 'Irish' Mary, I had an Irish grandmother, and she used that threat on me - my mother didn't enforce it, but we always had to finish our milk - and as an adult, I NEVER drink milk...oh, you mothers have awesome power...use it wisely!

We have the same thing over here.. except that it's the starving children in Somalia. I don't know if you had the same campaigns, but when we were growing up there were pictures of the famine in Africa all over the media. Pretty powerful stuff... needless to say, we all finished our plates.

What I meant was that.. what possible benefit would those children gain when I eat all those food and become obese? I hate these kind of manipulations

Yes Mary it is in our news now, and you are right there are NO BENEFITS to them. My parents didn't use that on us thankfully, but My mom did tell me not to waste, but her point was not to put more on your plate than you could eat. It was better to go back than to over stock your plate.

Our problem was there were 7 of us, oh wait, by the time I was old enough to remember there were
