Hey everyone,
I need some advice here. DH and I don't make a whole lot of money. He works and they take child support out of his check every two weeks and his check primarily goes towards bills that are in collection and we trying to pay off and I'm on disability and my check goes to paying, the rent, gas, car insurance, my medications, and cell phone bill. I set aside $20.00 a week for gas and food, 10.00 for each. I am just asking for some advice on what I can buy at the grocery store that would be low-fat (we are both trying to loose weight), and would last all week and wouldn't cost a whole lot. I know it's not a lot of money to work with but it's the best we can do until I get a job. So, any ideas would be great. TIA -Susan

Frozen veggies, especially store brands, are a really great deal!

I don't live in the US, so I am just offering some general advice.

I also find it helpful to look for foods with high fiber and protein in them. They can keep you feeling full for a longer period of time, and you are less tempted to overeat them. Eggs can work well as a snack or meal. I try to keep some hard-boiled eggs in the refrigerator. Also split pea and lentil soups have a lot of fiber in them, but can be loaded with sodium also! Bean enchiladas make a nice meal, and the leftovers can be saved for the next day. I totally agree with the frozen veggies and buying in bulk. A little planning can save big money! I also look for the sale items and try to stock up on non-perishable items that I know I will use. Oatmeal in the big canisters is also nice, because it is a quick breakfast and you can throw in some raisins bought in bulk also.

Here's another idea for higher priced stuff that you really like.

the "slow cook" rice is much cheaper than the instant rice
watch for frozen veggies especially when they are on sale
you can buy whole chicken or legs & thighs much cheaper than the boneless/skinless chicken breast.
if you have a farmers market in your area you can get veggies pretty reasonably.
good luck
