Struggling after Gastric Bypass
| Wed, 05-09-2007 - 10:40pm |
Hello!
I am new to ivillage. I had my Gastric Bypass, 12/12/05. I have lost 100 pounds. My BMI has gone from 56 to 40. I had been losing rather quickly, but now...I have hit a PLATEAU. I need to know what to do to continue losing weight.I am feeling down & frazzled! I started at 330 pounds. My goal is a healthy 145 pounds. I attend monthly nutrition classes and two support groups. Most of the people in the support groups have had the Lap band procedure. I exercise almost every day. Is anyone in the same situation or have you encountered this before. HELP! Thanks!! Hello Dancerchic and welcome to the board.
I haven't had gastric bypass surgery, so I don't have any advice really. Usually when I hit a plateau I either

I'm not sure if anyone who visits here regularly has had gastric by-pass.

Congrats on the 100 lbs. WTG.
My friend had gastric bypass a few years ago and I wish I could help you but unfortunately I don't recall her ever hitting a plateau. She only had a little over 100 lbs to lose and lost them within just a few months. Step SIL had the prociedure as well (have no clue how much she lost as she never told anyone what her weight was) but she never divulged any details. She had

Welcome!!
Congratulations on your weight loss so far! The progress you've already made shows your dedication and hard work. I completely understand your frustration with the plateau. The same thing happened to me. It almost seemed like my body "remembered" that weight from years before, because I had weighed that much for a long time before I eventually gained to my all-time high weight. I kept doing everything right, but the scale never moved.
The first thing I would suggest is changing your exercise routine or its intensity. It's fabulous that you exercise almost every day. In my case, I started out walking 4 miles every night to lose weight initially. When I hit my big plateau, I had to re-evaluate my workout. I realized in the beginning, I had been working up quite a sweat to walk those 4 miles. By the time I hit the plateau, I was able to walk the entire route without much effort. So I started jogging small intervals (like 1 minute at a time) and tried to push myself so I was sweating again but not so much that I dreaded exercise or was out of breath. You could also change activites to use different muscle groups. Eventually the weight started coming off slowly again.
Also, be sure to keep a positive attitude and give yourself credit for the progress you've already made. When I was trying to push through my plateau, frustration really took its toll and I slipped back into poor eating and exercise habits for awhile.
Best wishes!

Hi! Thanks I did not know about the other site. I LOVE this ivillage.com I feel connected to people that are going through similar issues. I love the support. Thanks again! Dancer Chic
What do the numbers stand for near the bottom of your message? I have seen them on others too.
my number are my high weight/ current weight/ goal weight.
Also regarding the bypass, my mom's friends daughter had it done about 6 yrs ago, and she is very slim now.. she exercizes about an hour every day no matter what, she does 4 days of cardio and 3 days of weights, she takes vitamins every day, drinks protein shakes for breakfast and really watches what she eats as far as portion sizes, amts of proteins, fats carbs etc..
good luck on your journey
