Staying on a Losing Track!

Hi y'all,

Well, another day, another chance to continue on our way to being healthy! I am looking at today as a new beginning! I am logging everything..my food choices, my exercise, my steps...I try to do a minimum of 10,000 a day. I feel that the boards are helping me to stay focused on my goal. I want to reach 145 lbs by 12/12/07. My BMI has gone from 56 to 40. My cholesterol has gone from 239 to 173. I have lost 100 pounds and so far a total of 70 inches. I feel GREAT today, but I am taking it 1 day at a time!

How are you guys doing? What are some of your tricks/successes.....?Do you log or journal? How much are you exercising? What programs are you following? How many calories? Let's get to GOAL!

Dancer Chic,

I LOVE your enthusiasm! This truly is one of the best parts of the board - getting each other excited and motivated for success!

Lately I've been doing pretty well with diet, but unfortunately I've let the exercise slide a little. Time to get back on track! My goal for each day is to walk/jog a 4 mile route that I mapped out. At first the loop seemed to take forever, but now each day it seems to go by a little faster. I find that walking outside makes things go more quickly also because each day there are new distractions (although I still prefer a treadmill if it is hot outside or full of mosquitoes!). Another benefit is after I walk 2 miles away from my house, I have no choice but to keep going to get back home. ;)

I do keep a notebook where I log everything I eat and estimate the calories. I try to keep this as simple as possible, or I probably wouldn't do it on a consistent basis. I have general goals of eating more fruits, veggies, fiber, etc. I don't set specific amounts however (again to try and keep it simple so I actually fill the notebook out every day). I don't beat myself up if I have a treat, but I am honest with myself about the calories and write them down so I have to face them. No one sees the logbook but me, so it is all about being honest with myself. After a few days of running out of allowed calories before 5 PM and watching my husband make a delicious supper, I modified the snacks so I still get a treat but I stop at a 100 calorie portion or so.

You've had GREAT success as well! What tricks/plans have you been using?

Dear KD,

I too try to log EVERYTHING every day. I count calories, fat & protein. I eat breakfast every morning. I have started buying a TERRIFIC treat...a frozen chocolate covered banana, 160 calories and tastes DELICIOUS ....I have it around 9 PM. I weigh myself every day too. I wear a pedameter every day. I walk a min. of 10,000 steps per day.

Today, I decided to ride my bike to & from the gym for extra exercise..RT 3 miles. I did all the machines: leg extension, leg curl, leg press, chest press, deltoid machine, bicep & tricep machines....etc. My hubby has put together a program for me.The entire routine takes me about an hour and I hit all the body parts. This does not include cardio. He has been exercising and weight training for 36 years. Because of the ivillage support and these messages, I feel in control and supported. I feel like I am half way there...from 330 lbs. to 230 pounds with 88 pounds to go! YEAH!

I also pray for guidance on my food choices. I feel that when I pray, I stop and think! This makes me less likely to eat too much!

I'll keep you posted on my progress ..... you too! Good luck! PLAN! PLAN! PLAN!

Your post is an inspiration to me. I am just starting with iVillage. I have grown children so that is not an issue, but my husband weighs all of 145 pounds, eats anything he wants and is healthy as a horse. I work two jobs including working in a prison hosptial with violent mentally ill men. I am so exhausted when I get home I can hardly get off the couch. I do not have the help you are lucky to have. How did you get started? Did you join a group? I have tried WW but didn't stick with it. I am about 300 lbs and want to get to 145 also. I have bought a treadmill because when I joined Curves I only went 9 times in a year. I look forward to any suggestions. I am getting a notebook to record my food because I know that is a must.

Hello!

In 2005, my primary physiciam told me that if I did not lose my weight, I could be dead in 5 or 6 years. He knew that I had tried NutriSystem, HMR, Physician's weight loss,WW NUMEROUS times, Jenny Craig....etc. He felt that I should look into having Gastric Bypass. I weighed 330 pounds. I was having knee, ankle and hip problems. I went through a battery of tests that lasted about 7 months. Finally, on 12/12/05, I had the Open gastric Bypass surgery. My BMI was 56....MORBIDLY OBESE. I was very blessed to have a great surgeon. I did not have any complications. I lost almost 95 pounds in 7 months! I have gone from a size 3X/4X, to a size 14. I have even bought some clothes that are Large. WOW!

I do exercise and log everything down. I try to exercise 5-6 days a week. I listen to my body. I had been in a plateau, but I am revved up again. I have lost 100 pounds. My goal is 144....WHY? Because at 144 pounds I will have a HEALTHY & normal BMI of 24%.

I am also new to ivillage and I give credit to this group for getting me revved up again! I am planning on posting as often as possible just to keep energized! feel free to send me an email if you want. I have also decided that I want to lose my last 86 pounds by my 2nd year anniversary of my Gastric Bypass Surgery!!!!

Good luck and do not give up. Less than 17 months ago, I cou;ld hardly move and today in the SCORCHING AZ sun I played 2 hours of tennis..not bad for someone who could hardly walk a few months back. take it one step at a time...1 pound at a time....

Thank you for your response. I guess I am resisting surgery because over the years I have had many major surgeries, thankfully none with complications but I do not have enough sick leave yet to be off work. I also blame myself so much because I teach cognitive retraining to prisoners to reduce violence and every day I ask myself why I do not follow my own counseling and retrain my eating. Of course there is always that pity party because I feel punished that I cannot do as others do and eat moderately. I have gotten to the size were I can hardly put on socks or tie my shoes. My ankles swell when I sit for any period of time and my doctor becomes so angry that I postpone going for my follow up visits. I am thinking about overeaters anonymous. I am the major breadwinner and if something would happen to me I do not think my husband can afford to maintain our home. I know that I am rattling on but I am so unhappy. Hopefully I will get on track and get down to business.

Good luck as you overcome this plateau. In the Oprah magazine this mother Suzy Orman gives 8 qualities of wealthy women and I think that they apply to success in any area of life. They are harmony and balance, wisdom and courage, generosity and happiness and cleanliness and beauty. I can tell from your posts that you have had the courage and wisdon to seek harmony and balance in your life. Your willingness to help others is generous and you exude new happiness. I am sure that you are a beautiful person inside and out, as to cleanliness you have probably cleaned out many an issue in your life and will continue to do so as your reach for your goal.

I look forward to future posts and to your continued success and good health.

What a motivational post DancerChick, thanks!! And congratulations on getting to 100lbs lost!!

Answering your questions, I keep a journal here on the board where I report in general if I'm on track or off track and if there are difficulties that are facing me. As for the food log, I make a copy of my weekly meal plan, and just tick things off or add things on it. I find it much easier this way. I know when I get things complicated, I stop recording.

I am planning to start exercising today.. 30

Welcome to the board lonestar_madge.. eating moderately isn't a very easy task to most of us here. I personally did not undergo surgery and I'm just trying to eat better and exercise. I think that even after almost 2 years of "dieting", I still can't say I'm eating moderately. But I'm trying and changing in that direction. My point is, don't expect yourself to be able to change 180 degrees just like that. Why don't you try having smaller goals for yourself, like for this week you

Madge, I hear you..especially the "I'm so unhappy" part...that's exactly how I feel. I know the sock and shoe scenario very well. I just connected with what you posted, wanted you to know. :)
