Out with the old!!!!

Okay a friend of mine wanted to give the slimfast diet the good old college try so to speak. So after a little research and trying to decide whether or not I wanted to risk sabotaging what weight I have already lost and then the weight I gained back during my illness I have decided to stop what my plan with the dietician and be her buddy on the slimfast plan. Now I am a little leary about the plan but she is going thru a difficult time right now and is feeling like she isn't getting enough support from others. So I thought what a better way to support her than doing the diet with her......I know probably sounds crazy but I really do want her to succeed at loosing the weight for herself and not for anyone else. I thought it may make it easier for her to stick with the plan if she had a buddy. I had tried the plan before and did have some marked success. I credit some of my weightloss thus far to the slimfast plan that I started a year ago and did for about a month. But then I got tired of what I felt was starving myself. Long story short I have been on the plan since Friday now and feel I am doing quite well!!!! I have a shake for breakfast and medium piece of fruit a couple hours later. Then for luch another shake and some prepackaged tuna or salmon. Then a couple hours later 1oz. of cheese and a serving of fruit. Then a normal dinner that my dietician would approve of. Then some cereal or popcorn w/o butter for a snack. Last night though was the exception I had the most wonderful no sugar klondide ice cream sandwich......sorry been a long time since I had had ice cream. Anyway I feel so far even though its been a few days that its going easier this time than the last time I tried the slimfast diet. She said she will start the diet Monday or Tuesday. Now since I am getting alot less than my recommended 1600 calories a day I am wonder if I should slack a little on my workouts at the gym(6days a week). I am now doing 1hour 40 minutes of cardio a day and I split the strength training over four days then I take a day of then 4 days on. Only working one muscle group at a time. I don't want to pass out or anything from lack of nutrition. So should I change my workouts to affect the little calories i am now getting? Because I am now 1000 calories or under.

Sorry for the long post. And thank for any input and recommendations!!!!!

Angie,
You need to do what's right for you, but I would be very careful of going under 1000 calories and cutting back on workouts.

For me, this journey is not so much about getting to goal as it is to find a way of life that I can sustain for about 40-50 years. And I think the plan you were on was probably better geared to that than a plan that relies on replacing 'real food' with something you have to buy.

I am single, and in many ways not that compassionate a person, so this may seem like a harsh statement-please do not be offended. But one thing I see 'sabotaging' people on this board is that the woman are so caring that they are willing to stop doing what is important to them to help the people they care about. Sometimes, this is the only choice-sick kids, ailing parents, out of work DH's, etc. But sometimes I want to just shake them and say "YOU MATTER". For your friend to suceed on her program, do you need to be on the same program? Can you not support her by making a success of your program? My program is based on the gym plus an eating plan-I don't need anyone else to be on that program to feel that they support me-the Weight Watcher ladies, the nutricion ladies, the Slim Fast ladies-they all give me encouragement...

If you want to do the Slimfast plan for you becasue you think it will help you, then that's great, and maybe cutting back on exercise a little will be a good choice-but if your plan was working for you, and you are building up both good exercise habits plus strength and endurance, and you like (or even don't hate) working out, I would urge you to think long and hard before you change just to help someone else.

You deserve to make your own health and well being a big priority in your life!

Again, I hope this isn't offensive to you, I just wanted to share my perspective, and I'm sure you know what is right for you.

Best wishes on your journey

Thank you so much for your words of what I will call wisdom. I guess once and a while it takes someone from the outside to make me see what should really matter and that is me. I am going to agree with you. I really do enjoy exercising on a daily basis and seeing that what I do makes a difference and affects me because I am being accountable for the choices I make. No one went on this journey with me I am on this journey alone so to speak. The members here are here for me when I need encouragement, advice, or just a swift kick in the butt............lol. Anyway thank you for helping me to see that the program that I am on (as of right now I'm done with the slimfast) is the right one for me. I should be doing this for me and my health not to make her succeed at what she wants. I will be there to give advice and my 2 cents from time to time but in reality thats all I can do.

THANK YOU!!!!!

Angie,
You are very welcome!

I am glad that you are making yourself and what you need a priority for you.

Yesterday, I bought myself some flowers at lunch time and someone I met in the elevator said 'You're buying flowers for yourself?' and I said 'If I don't love me enough to buy me flowers, who will?'

I'm glad you love yourself enough to take care of you!

Best wishes and enjoy those workouts!
