weight lose and exercise for 56 yr old
| Fri, 05-25-2007 - 2:47pm |
hi i'm a 56 yr old female that is more than 100 lbs over weight. i have arthritis in my knees so it hard to exercise. i would like some ideas of exercise that i can do that dosn't require a lot of standing but can help me lose the weight in my tummy area and thighs. i also have heart problems and diabetic. any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about a pool either swimming laps, pool walking or pool aerobics--no impact when in the water.
also try this site for help, they have suggestion and possible contact them. www.arthritis.org--
many times losing the weight will help the arthritis and eventually you might be able to start a walking program with the advice of your doctor.

I agree with the swimming/pool exercise suggestion.
I'd also like to point out that although exercises targetting a certain area will build muscle in that area, they don't burn fat in that area. So if doing anything for your legs is hard, then you can focus on using your upper body to burn calories.
If you get a couple sets of dumbbells-say three and five pounds, you can get a nice twenty minute workout in without even standing up:
- Shoulder press
- Side/front laterals
- Bicep curl/hammer curl
- Row
- Tricep extension
I know you can find good instructions on-line, and if this interests you I'd be happy to explain the positions for these if that will help.
If you start out doing three sets of 10 at whatever weight you are comfortable with, you can build up to more repetitions with heavier weights.
You doctor might also be able to prescribe physical therapy that would take your legs through a gentle range of motion.
The key to this whole thing is Move More/Eat Less...
Best wishes

Welcome aboard......
Wish I had some advice but unfortunately I just push through whatever pain I have or I would never do anything.....LOL
I may not be but 31 but I have a bad back and bad knees due from being so hard on my body as a teen..LOL
I wish you the most luck. Congrats on moving and getting a pool. I think that is one reason DH forbid me to look for a house with a pool, he knew I would stay in it all hte time......LOL
NO seriously it was fear for our kiddos but I would have stayed in it all the time if I could. LOL
HAVE FUN WITH THE POOL!!

Hello and welcome to the board. You've come to a great place for support. I couldn't agree more with what the other ladies say about getting in a pool. I find one of the most relaxing strokes is the breast stroke. You just lay on your stomach and kick your legs out like a frog would and make a circular motion with them. Not too much bending for the knees and in my opinion very relaxing. I think with starting that stroke would be good for you, if you think so. You could just do between 3-5 at a time and see how that works. Hope this helps and again welcome to the board!
