bypass surgery?

I have a good friend who had the surgery, with minimal complications. Part of what made me want to do this was how really happy she was and how much fun she had as she moved to her new life. But I noticed that she ate salad with chicken every day, took vitamins, and went to the gym-and I thought I'd try the behavioral changes without the cutting...I was probably not heavy enough to qualify, but I considered eating more so I could be eligible...

I also know someone who had the surgery and almost died-she is OK today, and loves the results, but it was a big risk and very scary.

So it is something you need to really consider-I think it isn't so much a 'quick fix' but kind of a last resort...

Best wishes

I mostly lurk, but thought I would add my two cents here. I have not considered it because I view it as simply exchanging one medical issue for another. With gastric bypass surgery, comes lifelong physiological changes and complications. At this point, it hasn't been researched enough to know what the long term complications/issues could be. The lifelong lifestyle changes that are required with bariatric surgery, are the same changes that are required without it in order to acquire and maintain substantial weight loss. The only real difference, to me, is that you have the medical issue of the surgery to require it to be adhered to more closely. Altering my physiological structure voluntarily, is not something I would care to do.

I personallly know 3 people who have had it, 1 had a great expierence and is high on life now. She eats normally with the exception she can't have sugar without consequences...LOL 1 had a few problems but overcome them and now is too thin but okay, the other almost died, still has problems to this day and isn't enjoying the benefits at all. So that being said no I wouldn't consider it!

The Learning Channel recently had a program on gastric bypass the pros and cons and actually showed part of the surgery. it was very interesting but once the surgery started and many of the risks discussed, I would never do it as an elective - only if it were a life death scenario.

i never considered it while i was losing the weight. you still need to make the same life style changes people make without the surgery.
