Hi. I just came across this group and I was excited to find it. My name is Cathy and I am a single mom to a wonderful 8yr old son. I currently weigh 294. I lost 5 pounds from February. I am excited because it is so hard for me to lose weight. I have been overweight all my life. I am also a T2 diabetic. Is there anyone else here that is a T2 diabetic?? I was wondering what kind of diets or eating plans you guys do to help you lose the weight. I was at my heaviest at 302. I am going to try to start walking in the evenings at our local mall (no I won't be doing any shopping-going to leave the wallet in the car), I am also going to take me son with me because he is on the heavy side too. He weighs about 100 lbs and he is 4'5". I will take any suggestions that I can get. I have a hard time finding an eating plan that I can stick with. I also have a hard time getting motivated. But the one thing that is getting me motivated is because I don't want to see my son have some of the same problems that I had growing up, and my boyfriend and I have talked about having a baby. Everyone on here seems so supportive and knows what I am going through. Most of my family on my mom's side is skinny to normal weight and those on my dad's side are normal weight to overweight. My mom was overweight until she started chemo and she lost quite a bit of weight before she passed away. My dad is a little overweight but not like he used to be.
Thank you all for your advice,
Cathy

Cathy,
What a great gift you are planning for your son - a healthier mom and a way to be healthier himself. It is never easy to be heavy, and especially for kids, small diet changes and increased activity can make quick changes that will really build up his self-esteem.
Walking around the mall is a great way to start. You might also look into what a local Y or Boys and Girls club has to offer - programs that you can both participate in.

Welcome aboard, and best of luck to you and your son!!
It is a good way to spend time with him and help both of you at the same time!!
I wish you much success!

welcome.. i'm not diabetic but my father was, i had gestational diabetes when I was pg, so i had to limit my carbs & sugars when i had that, and amazingly i found it easier to watch my eating when i was pg, compared to before or after.
good luck
