OK.. I really need some food help

I haven't been around in a lil bit.. been sick and holed up in bed, when I'm not working. I'm not quite better, but I'm well enough to baby step my way back into my plan.

I can exercise.. I get it, persistence pays.. a little by little every day.. I'll get stronger and better.

I can drink water.. I do have an undying love for soda and I've been drinking it while I've been sick since it's one of the few fluids I can stomach. I also have quit soda before I can do it again.

My problem is food.. specifically veggies. I don't like the taste/texture of most every vegetable.. especially the raw stuff and I don't know what to do to overcome this obstacle.
I eat corn, potatoes, boiled green beans, some lettuce (must not be veiny or iceberg), tomato (sliced thin and on something)... and honestly that is about it.

I have a fairly serious love of bread and pasta, but one thing at a time.. anybody have a suggestion for getting more veggies in my plan?

thanks for the help
Jess

Careful not to have too many potatoes - while they're in the veggie family, they are starches when cooked - and who eats raw potatoes?

Acutally I eat raw potatoes.......LOL my kids do too. Maybe we are just weirdos or something. LMAO

The only way I will eat purple hull peas is raw too. Mom always told me I was weird. Guess she was right. LMAO

There are very few cooked veggies I like.

Try steaming cauliflour until it is very soft and mash them like potatoes.

Angela, I don't think your weird. I've eaten raw potatoes also, they are actually quite good that way.

Hi there,

I've discovered is that veggies are like beer--they are definitely an acquired taste. I never thought I'd crave them, but now I do. Trust me, it wasn't always like that!!

I am a big fan of the green veggie steam bags. Have you tried them? They're SO tasty--if they taste good, you'll eat them! Personal favorite: Green Giant garden vegetable medley. It is incredible! Actually, any of the green giant frozen veggies are delicious. Birds Eye also does steamed veggie bags and they're good too, but they're not seasoned like the Green Giant bags.

But I also want to point out that you can certainly also up your fruit intake if you don't particularly like veggies. Stick with the veggies you can tolerate and just eat more fruit.

All of this is about changing your life with new food and exercise choices. They're both necessary. It's not necessarily easy, because we're too used to shoveling food in without thought to content. Oprah says to make sure that your food choices are colorful and not white or beige--literally. i.e. Mashed yams instead of mashed potatoes! Same texture, slightly different taste, and a great compromise in a health choice for you.

Again, I know that it's not easy, but I've walked this walk too and I never EVER thought I'd enjoy eating veggies. But I do. I just stick with the ones I love...and interestingly, the list of the ones I love just keeps growing!!

Hang in there!

Hi Janice,

great job on the soda.. I know it's a difficult thing to give up. I find that if I have it around, I'm going to reach for that first.. no matter what. I was off it completely for several years and then I started with.. well.. one every once in awhile won't hurt. It was all downhill from there. But the good news is.. I know where I went wrong last time and I know I can kick it again.

I am going to give broccoli a try. I have a bag of it in the fridge right now.. staring at me. I think the bottom line is I'm just going to have to suck it up and try.

thanks for the advice!

Hi Wendy..

it's nice to see I'm not alone on the veggie thing!! So far raw veggies in ranch haven't worked for me and if I see veggies in anything, I just pick around them. geez I eat like a 4 year old sometimes! LOL

Blended soup sounds like a good way to go.. I'm going to try to make some tonight for lunch tomorrow.

thanks for the advice

Hi Kelly;

you're right about the potatoes.. I certainly don't eat them raw..and so it's just more starch in my diet. I think corn is supposed to be about the same.

I think blended soup is a great way to start and I would love to try your recipes. Whichever works best for you.. if you like you can post them to the board.. or my email is gaiku2@gmail.com

I'll have to try the snap peas too. I went out veggie shopping this weekend. I saw them there but I thought to myself... you can't buy too much or it will go bad before you have a chance to try it all

thanks!!
