Time to play "The Top 50 Excuses Writers Use for NOT Writing." Here's where you can purge yourself of your secret shame and list your best, worst, and/or most pathetic reasons (Heh hum; EXCUSES) for NOT writing. We're not stopping until we get to 50 -- so feel free to list a multiple of writerly vices.

Okay, first let me say...Really, your comma key is sticking and that's why you can't write?!

My favorite is that I am too busy. Which could be true sometimes, but I do spend a lot of time at work surfing the web looking at stupid stuff, like TMZ.com.

The truth is...drum roll please...

I am just lazy.

ROFL! YES! I swear, my comma key is sticking and YES, I admit that I used it as an excuse. Terrible, isn't it? Notice, if you will, how many, many commas I am using in this response. Therefore, whether the key is sticky, or not, I should have no problem writing with it!

Excuse #4: I'll start writing in an hour. Yeah, right ;)

Great idea, Tori!

I sympathize with your comma problem. I'm getting used to hitting the Shift Lock key every time I need an upper case letter. This is developing a rather odd form of touch typing. Too bad the Shift Lock doesn't work for all the characters. (Hence all the 1s instead of exclamation points and /s instead of question marks.)

#6 - I promise I'll start writing right after I catch up on the iVillage message boards and my e-mails AND walk the dogs, do the dishes, read my horoscope to see if I should have even gotten out of bed, get the mail, fetch some groceries, vacuum 40 tons of dog hair from the floor, wash some clothes, clean out

#7: My kids won't let me.

Which is true, because with them running around the house, fighting with each other, screaming, crying, making messes . . . I cannot focus on writing. This is why, when I write (like, really write) I have to get up very early in the morning so that I have that quiet time to do it. Which leads me to my next excuse . . .

Well, now let's see...

9. My 4 yo is hungry
10. My 2.5 yr old isn't napping
11. My husband is naked in bed with me (hey! It's distracting!)
12. House MD is on
13. Grey's Anatomy is on
14. I'm too tired
15. I can't find my humor! I can't stand dull writing
16. My contacts are fuzzy and my glasses won't sit straight on my face (this really IS irritating)
17. My writing group is emailing me
18. It takes two hands to eat the cake at hastings (where we do our weekly write-ins)
19. I need to catch up on about 15 different phone calls
20. my 4 yo is hungry again

#21. The Internet! I have to read my e-mail and look at all my message boards and look at my favorite websites that update on a daily basis, etc. And since I have fibromyalgia and can't write longhand I have to type all my drafts on the computer, which just happens to be connected to the Internet. Now if we were still on dial up it wouldn't be that much of a problem, since in the past I'd get so frustrated at dial up that I'd just say forget about it. But with DSL the Internet is so close now.
