I told a "friend" that I was trying my hand at writing a romance. Her response was, "Oh, I thought you were a real writer." How would you have handled this?

Laughed in her face. Said, "oh, that's a good one. Remind me how many books you've published again?"

Walk away.

This is NOT a friend.

I agree with Devon (manyquills). I'd laugh in her face, too.

Seems every time I go to a used bookstore and the owner finds out I write, I'm told to try romance. It's a huge market, granted, but they seem to be throw-away books. When I started writing, my goal was not to write fire kindling. Oh, I did write garbage wrap when I started. My first works were published in a newspaper. Back then

To build on Judy's comment, what this person has done is a form of censorship. Don't let ANYONE censor your work.

I think it's just ignorance/snobbishness.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder and a smart/empathetic person would recognize this and not dis someone else.

I've been reading romances for over 35 years and believe me, those are "real" books written by "real" writers! I agree: that person is not a friend to you. She should have said something like, "Oh, that's great! I'll be looking forward to reading it!" Just laugh, shake your head, walk away, and tell your real and true friends that you're writing a book. Forget about this so-called friend and move on.

Great source of support, that one. Ask her what she has written lately?

Sorry but I am just stunned when I hear people get these kinds of remarks from family and friends. I don't know a soul who has ever laughed at my efforts to write and be published. If they doubt me they don't say anything at all.

Joyce Meyer lost a lot of friends and got kicked out of her church when she said she was going to be a Preacher. The woman has been doing it for a couple of decades now, has several books, CDs and DVDs on the market. She went with what God told her to do. For those of you who don't believe in that, then go with your conscience, your heart, your passion (it's all the same). Do what YOU want to do.

Good luck!
