Okay, now I need to share a "Melville" moment: Like most writers, I have always read to my child. Picture books quickly lost their mystique for my daughter. She wanted longer and longer "bed time" stories. When she was seven, she decided that we needed to start reading "classics." Don't get me started on how a seven year old kid knew that there was a difference between contemporary works and "classics" -- that is a story for another day. Anyway, we eventually worked our way through a rather vast selection of classics. Then, the day I had been putting off for about a year came: it was the day my daughter pulled out her enormous copy of Moby Dick.

We sat down to begin reading Melville's classic, but before reading I explained that she was about to hear one of the most famous first lines in all of literature. So I began reading: "Call me Ishmael." And my daughter let out a sigh and said, "That's so awesome!"

And, it is.
