To use a mask in Gimp (Use the same technique to cut a picture with a brush):
1. Open your image and do whatever edits you want to use.

2. Open your mask. (If using a brush, stamp it on a transparent layer and skip to step 4)

3. Resize your mask. Right click the mask layer in your layer palette and choose "Scale layer." Make it the same size as your photo.

4. Position the mask over the part of the photo you want to show.

5. Right click your mask layer in your layer palette and choose alpha to selection.

6. Click your photo layer, then ctrl-c to copy the selection.
7. Ctrl-v to paste the selection, then anchor the new layer to make it show.

8. Click the eye next to your original photo turn that layer off. Also turn off the mask layer.

Here's your finished product!

Where did you get the heart mask?
I found it on this site: http://www.digiscrapbooking.ch/shop/.
It was free when I got it, but I'm not sure if it still is. It was made by tinette. Her blog link is: http://tinettedesins.blogspot.com/. It may be in the freebies section. Both sites are in French.
