RED ALERT!!

I gotta know!

Is anyone here allergic to chocolate? I never have been, but yesterday a co-worker gave me a piece of 76% chocolate that he got from a friend in France. It was weirdly bitter and kinda made my mouth numb and my throat sore and a little swollen. My throat was still sore this morning but better.

Could this be allergic reaction? Does anyone know? Do I need to call my doctor? Am I overreacting?

Anything but chocolate...please.

It's probably because it was from France! ;-) My son had a friend who was supposedly allergic to chocolate. Don't know if she really was or if her parents just didn't want her to have it.

Hope you feel better, Booty. I've heard of allergic reactions where the throat swells up. Yikes! You might check with your doctor. After you feel better, go test some Hershey's kisses or something like that for good measure.

Hugs,

Those are certainly symptoms. Do you need to call the Dr? I dunno. I probably wouldn't since you are ok but....that's your call.

I'm also allergic to chocolate....it makes me fat :-)

I wonder if taking some Benedryl would help? It's supposed to be good for some allergic reactions. Sure hope you're feeling better soon.

That does sound like it may be an allergic reaction. Maybe there was something else in it that got you, I wonder what the other 24% was? Do you have other allergies? I'm pretty sure you could get a skin test at the doctors to see if you are allergic to chocolate - either that or never let the stuff pass your lips again (my life would be over).

I hope you feel better.

LoL...yeah, it makes me swell up alllll over. If it happens again, I'll be calling the doc. I had a bite-size Milky Way Midnight (ok, I had 2) this morning and it didn't give me any problems. Maybe it *was* just because it was French. I dunno.

Just to make sure, I also had a piece of devil's food cake at lunch. Purely in the interest of scientific research....

76% is pretty rich in chocolate...maybe it was just too much for me and my dainty constitution.

I have scads of allergies, but none to food, unfortunately. I'm sure that never eating chocolate again would certainly take care of the problem, but I don't see that as a realistic solution. After all, a day without chocolate is like a day without oxygen....

Lori - A Google search under chocolate turned up thousands of sites. This one is not exactly scientific, but it talks about the history of chocolate, the different types, the basics, the various ingredients that chocolate contains, incluidng a compound called phenolics. I didn't read all of it, but maybe it will give you some clues:

www.exploratorium.edu/chocolate

This next one has a lot of pages that are under construction, but I thought the name of the site was interesting and it looks promising. There's even a message/discussion board:

www.seventypercent.com

I sure do hope it's only the variety of chocolate you ate that caused the problem and not chocolate in general.

Here's an excellent, informative site on food allergies, symptoms, common culprits, etc. Only epinephine will work to stop a true anaphylactic reaction, so I guess Benedryl wouldn't have been much help.

http://www.allergic-reactions.com/home/causes_food.html

This one is about chocolate allergy or intolerance. Apparently, it's very rare. You could react to something that is in the chocolate.

I learned some new things today. :-)
