Any of you ever experience an onslaught of spiders in your house? I've killed four of them today...two normal sized, two large..and I mean 3 inch large. Any idea why all of a sudden they're favoring our home? Ever think about them crawling on you at night while you sleep or is that just my particular phobia.

Anyway, I just took a shower, grabbed my towel that had been there since yesterday, and big spider jumped out at me. I screamed and killed it.

Any ideas?

Phyllis - After I read your post, the hair on my arms stood up straight and is still at attention. With how much I hate and am absolutely petrified of bees, I'd have stuck up a "for sale" sign and hightailed to Wyoming! Either that or I'd have passed out and become a bee feast on the living room floor.

This is why I don't garden or hang out outdoors. I flipped out when I saw - from indoors at my dining room window! - the yellowjackets buzzing around the eaves of my house last week and called an exterminator pronto.

Such a baby....

Patty - Mice also like bran muffins, but not raisins! At my old job, a co-worker had purchased a bran-and-raisin muffin, ate half of it, and wrapped up the other half and left it in her desk for the next day. Was she ever surprised to find the bran muffin gone, all the raisins left behind, and other, uhmm, signs of mouse visits in her desk. I remember her pulling the drawer out, emptying the contents on the floor, and calling the custodian to come and vacuum the rug and sterilize the drawer. Honest.

Deb - Not just bees, I don't tolerate bugs of any kind really well. The were meant to live outdoors, and we have evolved to be indoor dwellers and that's the way of the world. We get spiders occasionally - no rhyme or reason for when they show up, they just do. Not the big creepy ones, just the little nuisance ones. They seem to like hanging out in the bathroom. I just flip a towel at them and shake it into the tub or john and run the faucet or flush. If I thought I had an infestation of any kind, I'm calling a pro to deal with it. It's worth the peace of mind and the guarantee they provide for up to anywhere from a month to a year.

We did have a significant carpenter ant problem a few years back. Ick. Big, fat slow-moving things. They were in the kitchen, around the door and the cabinets next to it. We called an exterminator, who not only sprayed for them, but also went looking around for the nest. Turns out it was under our old, rotting stair landing (a tiny back porch and a few steps to the yard). We were going to pull the porch and stairs down anyway because they were really wobbly. Between DH and the exterminator, a couple of good shoves and the whole thing came down. No real problems since - just an occasional one that probably falls from the trees out back after a good rain and finds its way in.

If you're that creeped out by them and there are that many, call a pro.

I don't get freaked out by spiders if I know that their there.

If I'm nervous or afraid of something I'll take the time to learn as much as I can about it. There used to be a *huge* spider on the deck of our house in New Jersey. I even nick named it "Charlotte" after the story, Charlotte's Web. Those were the days when I smoked cigarettes and so I took my lighter and burned a big hole in the web. I was amazed to find that it was totally repaired within a few hours. I learned alot from that spider.

Spiders seem to be the insect that people have the greatest phobias about. There are more spiders in the Pacific North West though, but some bug spray should be enough to keep them away. If the problem is really bad an exterminator might be the better solution.

Catherine.
