Lets talk about food!

Here is something I think we all enjoy talking about and heaven knows there is enough ideas and opinions floating around all of us. I think Patti asked Deb-WA about how much or how little she eats and it kind of got me thinking. How much is too much? What works for you and why? Lets share secrets, or just ideas. Since we are going to try Nancy's idea of the 5 out of 7 good days I thought this might help.

I guess I can start. I have found especially in this past week I have done better with my low carbs and higher protien by having several meals through out the day. I hate to call them "meals" but more snacks. By journaling things too I find I have made an effort to behave. My busier days when I do not eat my snacks I feel hungrier and have trouble controlling the urge to splurge. Having the proper "tools" in the house is so important too. I found this week I made JELLO. Not for the kids but for me. The sugar-free ones, and some Cool Whip Free for the top......yummy! Only 25 calories for that snack and no carbs. Welches Ice Pops are great too only 25 calories. A great summer treat. Also after my last shopping trip I took Chicken Cutlets, and rewrapped the breasts individually.

Well that was some of my ideas this week. Any one else find something that works well for them?

Sounds like great ideas to me. I've also made sure that my snacks are just enough to take care of the hunger and on my meals, I've been trying to be careful about not overdoing it. I eat pretty fast and I've had too many times that I feel stuffed. So I guess portion control has been the big one for me. I haven't had any bread, potatoes, rice or sugar for almost 3 weeks now. Seems to be working.

Portion control is a biggie for me too. I just love huge portions. Your comment about not having the carbs......breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, is important. Have you craved them. What are you eatting more of? Its only been one week for me and I really have not had to fight the cravings as bad as I thought.

I haven't craved them either. I'm eating more salads. Most of it for me is what I'm eating less of :-(. I'm really determined to get this weight off so I think that's really taken care of the cravings also. I also like fresh vegetables raw and dip in a little bleu cheese. I find that if I have a salad dressing that has a lot of taste to it, I'm better at not using too much. I'm trying to enjoy more quality than quantity.

I need to get back on The South Beach Diet. It incorporates eating several times throughout the day to keep your blood sugar level and prevent binging, limits bad carbs, and has great food. It just cuts out the stuff I really crave (bad carbs) especially ice cream. Since I've been eating ice cream again, I can see it in my abdomen. After this half gallon is gone, I CAN'T bring any more in the house at least for a while.

I know this sounds weird, but if I cook a bag of kale (in enough fat-free chicken broth & apple cider vinegar to steam it) and keep it in the frig. for when I get cravings for sweets, it really helps to curb them. I take out a bowl full and heat it in the microwave. It is one of the healthiest foods there is and has next to no calories or carbs.

I do better with small meals/snacks thru the day. I do very well when no one is home and I'm busy.I do lousy when I'm stressed or hormones are out of whack.Like Rhonda, I'm thinking ice cream is something I really need to cut out.Certain food are trigger foods for me.For example if I have popcorn I usually want chocolate soon afterwards.I'm not a person who stops at one chip.So I need to cut these foods out if I want to see results.

Phyllis, I think it is great that you have cut out the sugar.I'm working at that but still have a ways to go.

This month I'm going to look at it as what I'm doing good for my body not what I'm giving up.

I really, really like The Formula diet which is much the same as South Beach except that you can have fruit.

I always have the same thing for breakfast every morning (1/2 Cup Cottage Cheese, 1/4 cup grapes, 1/2 cup strawberries, and 1 kiwi) together with coffee, of course. For lunch and dinner I alternate around 2 or 3 options. Some people might find that boring but for standard M-F meals it cuts planning for meals down to a minimum.

I wash and flash freeze fresh blueberries and strawberries for when I want something cold and sweet. They go a lot farther when they are frozen.

If I have been careful with my choices, I can also add a little bit of table cream to them and when it freezes on them, it tastes a little bit like ice cream coating them.(Yummy).

Thats an idea I did not think of. I buy the large size berries and often some go bad before I get to finish them. Maybe I shouls ziplock them into some smaller bags first and freeze(But what did you mean, flash freeze?)Maybe I will buy the Curves Vanilla Protien drink this week and add some berries to change the taste.

Most of the time I buy the family size bags of already frozen strawberries, blueberries, or peaches and just take out what I need when I want them. They're especially good in smoothies, because they give them a thicker texture.

"(But what did you mean, flash freeze?)"

***************************

I buy really nice berries. I wash them and dry them on paper towels. Then I spread them out on a paper-towel lined cookie sheet (with sides so they don't roll off LOL). Put them in the freezer for about 1/2 hour or so and then put them in containers to keep in the freezer. This way they don't freeze in a lump so that I can take out a small amount at a time.

Best thing.....I don't have rotten berries anymore....and they do taste great!!
