been restored. Pretty, scary! I was at work when the lights flickered, computers started beeping and then there was 4 of us sitting in the office in the dark. After we found a few people that had access to the news and we learned of the wide spread outage we immediately thought some kind of terrorist attack. Fortunately I only live a mile from work so I waited for the traffic to settle down since all the offices let out at the same time. By the time I got home everyone else in the family was home except for younger DD. She arrived home about 1/2 hour after me. DH found a Coleman lantern we had stashed away so we sat outside until the bugs started eating us alive. Lots of people helping other people and then you have those that use the situation for no good. Around 10:30 DS got a call from the boss at the bike store that the alarm had gone off in the store. She lives about 45 minutes from the store and we live down the block so she asked Ds if he could walk down there since the police had not responded. DS and DH headed down with flashlights in tow. The front of the store is full glass. When they got there and saw that a rock and a piece of concrete thrown through the front window. Of course no one knows whether they intended to walk off with bicyles assuming that the alarm wouldn't work or whether they were just being stupid. The police arrived shortly after that and DS called the boss DH and DS waited for her and some other coworkers to arrive to see if they could secure the store. Of course they couldn't so they ended up staying down at the store all night.

Just wanted to let you know that all is well here in Nassau County. 75% of LI seems to have its power back. Hoping Grace and LI Beb are OK too. Still have to see what's left in the refrigerator and freezer. I'm expecting there will be some restocking that will have to be done.

Hope anybody else effected is doing OK.

What a night! I saw the blackout on TV last night and it was so weird to look at New York City with no lights other than the cars. Creepy. Glad you're back in the land of the electrified.

Susan - Glad to hear your family is safe and power is back on. I immediately though of you, Deb, and Grace when I read the news around 4:30. I know your office is close to your home, but I wondered about how the blackout affected commutes home, aside from the lack of computers, lights, AC and fans for this abominable heat, and other conveniences.

No ill effects around Boston, as you know. But I thought we were in trouble later in the evening as power started coming back on - our lights/tv/AC flickered a few times around 10:30, I went scrambling around to shut off the items that we really didn't need to have on, and everything settled down. I've since figured out that one of my living room lamps is the culprit and promptly unplugged it; I'll keep the lampshade, but the rest of it will be tossed and replaced - we won't fool with anything electrical, and frankly I don't like it that much.

Hope you don't loose your freezer stock. Take care!

Susan,

The first news I heard of the blackout was when my DIL called my work office asking if anyone had checked on my Mom concerned that she would be alone in the dark. A quick call to Mom and DS to find that Boston was not affected (which they said was on our news) Then my thoughts went directly to our LI board gals. I had you all in my thoughts all last night hoping that you were not experiencing a difficult night.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post and letting us know the status of the blackout. I'm sure at times like this you are thankful for the fact that you live close to you job. The news reported that some people walked 2-3 hours to get back home last night. I just can't imagine doing that.

Hope you all are able to salvage your fridge foods.

Margie :)

Glad you & family are safe, Susan! I don't know what I'd do if that happened to me (especially if I lived in a big city). We lucked out with power outages in winter - most people have the propane heaters & lanterns & most people have fireplaces out here. It was miserable for 3 days, though! I think it would be worse in the summertime, though, without power. I can't imagine life without AC in home or car (actually, I went a whole year & a half without AC in my car. Don't ever wish to do that again).

Hope life returns to normal again, soon!

Hugs,

I am SO glad to know that you are okay. I thought of you gals immediately when I heard it and have been wondering all day long. What a scary experience and hopefully they'll get it figured out so it doesn't happen again.

We have power outages all of the time out here in the rural area. Ours mainly happen during storms, though, when branches fall on the lines and break them or during blizzards and ice storms in the winter. Then the weight of the snow and ice break lines. Many of us have generators so we can get through those times.

I'm glad that you are okay.

Yeah - blizzards and icestorms - definitely good at taking down the power. At home in Minneapolis, we've got a full campkitchen and propane heaters and a fireplace - we even have the campstove coffee maker. So if the power goes out, we're set. We also keep bottled water on hand always, in case of problems like Cleveland is having...

Apparently storms will take down electrical here in Italy but I haven't experienced that yet.

Why do some people have to BE like that??

I'm glad that you all are o.k. I have to say it was really weird seeing N.Y. city cloaked in darkness with only the Statue of Liberty lit up. So eerie.
