been restored. Pretty, scary! I was at work when the lights flickered, computers started beeping and then there was 4 of us sitting in the office in the dark. After we found a few people that had access to the news and we learned of the wide spread outage we immediately thought some kind of terrorist attack. Fortunately I only live a mile from work so I waited for the traffic to settle down since all the offices let out at the same time. By the time I got home everyone else in the family was home except for younger DD. She arrived home about 1/2 hour after me. DH found a Coleman lantern we had stashed away so we sat outside until the bugs started eating us alive. Lots of people helping other people and then you have those that use the situation for no good. Around 10:30 DS got a call from the boss at the bike store that the alarm had gone off in the store. She lives about 45 minutes from the store and we live down the block so she asked Ds if he could walk down there since the police had not responded. DS and DH headed down with flashlights in tow. The front of the store is full glass. When they got there and saw that a rock and a piece of concrete thrown through the front window. Of course no one knows whether they intended to walk off with bicyles assuming that the alarm wouldn't work or whether they were just being stupid. The police arrived shortly after that and DS called the boss DH and DS waited for her and some other coworkers to arrive to see if they could secure the store. Of course they couldn't so they ended up staying down at the store all night.

Just wanted to let you know that all is well here in Nassau County. 75% of LI seems to have its power back. Hoping Grace and LI Beb are OK too. Still have to see what's left in the refrigerator and freezer. I'm expecting there will be some restocking that will have to be done.

Hope anybody else effected is doing OK.

"I think it would be worse in the summertime, though, without power."

I don't think I would go quite as far to say that, Kat. I think both extremes are lousy alternatives. I can laugh now, but I remember our big ice storm 5 years ago. We were without power for over a week....there were some areas without power for over 1 MONTH! We stayed home for 2 days of it but then we had to abandon our home. It was really creepy hearing the ice crashing around us in the pitch blackness of night. It was SOOOO cold - we don't have a fireplace and everything is electric. The only good thing I can say is that I didn't lose anything from my fridge...I was smart enough to keep everything out on the counter...my house was MUCH colder than the fridge!! (LOL)

There were quite a few houses that burned down to the ground because people left without properly shutting down their water tanks after draining the systems and when the electricity was restored there were explosions that caught fire. It was just awful.... but enough about that....any loss of electricity is a major inconvenience 'cause we're just too dependant on it. It is amazing just how much we take for granted when there are people all over this world who live with devastation and much worse every day. We are really and truly lucky for just how much we have.

But that's just my opinion.
