Why is everyone saying get out of it? I have put if off for years because my kids were small plus my job was watching 2 others. This past spring I got a notice but had to postpone because of vacation. Now this week I am to serve. I called on Saturday and sure enough my number was told to report. Not to the local court close by but out in Riverhead about a 45 minute drive. I also have to report the the Supreme Court out there. I am happy to do this and I am looking forward to this experience. Everyone else is like just do not be nice or they will pick you. Whats up with this?

Well thats is going to be my day for now. I am hoping to run to Curves tonight. Wish me luck!

Wow! I'm on call for the next two weeks for jury duty, too! I don't know why people say try to get out of it. I'm not going to worry about it. If I get called, I get called. Have to take my turn anyway. Let me know how it goes.

Good luck with jury duty. The attorney I work for has actually changed his method of speaking & questioning potential jurors through their eyes by actually experiencing being on jury duty. I'll be curious to see how it goes for you. Court calendars are usually pretty slow in the summer.

I think people make too much of it. It *is* inconvenient (I worked full-time at the time and got so far behind on my work), cuts a week out of your routine, you do a *lot* of waiting, and the cases I sat on were extremely airheaded - all of them car accidents where the plaintiff wanted more money than the insurance companies would settle for (legal lotto). The waiting around was the worst. I didn't see where I'd have had a good reason to get out of it, I don't lie, and really, it's the one civic duty aside from voting that I might make a difference.

I got called once as a student and got a "deferment". The second time I was called, I actually had a choice of which courthouse to do the service at, with the understanding that if the court didn't have sufficient business, I'd have to go to the one farther away. It ended up that my call came for the district court 2 towns away. It was one of those airhead cases Cussette spoke about - not terribly interesting, but it was only for two days so it was not inconvenient at all. I haven't been called since. No doubt I'll get another call-up soon now. Just part of being an American - happy to do it.

The one experience I had with jury duty was miserable. We were herded around like cattle and basically just sat for days, while they interviewed people and made their decisions. It was tortuously boring. Turned out, I was never even questioned and didn't have to serve. I know it's our duty, but it just seems there must be a better way to make the selections. Hope your experience is a good one.
