OK, It has been 20 years since I graduated from college with my B.S and even though I do go through continuing education as an RN, I figured it was time for me to go back to college. I love learning, put me is a bookstore over shopping any day of the week (weird I know). Tonight was my first class (History) and I sat there, feeling like I was going to have a major panic attack. Of course I got there about 1/2 hour early, like an older panicky student would and I watched as the young co-ed's arrived. There were a few others like me, but all I could think of was, am I smart enough, can I remember enough and can I take notes fast enough. A very scary experience for an older gal like me !

Sharon,

Congratulations on going back to school! Are you going back to just take some classes or are you looking towards your masters? I think it's great!

Sharon:

I went back to school at 34. It wasn't any easier then. But I found out pretty quickly that I have the edge over the co-eds. I'm there to learn. I'm not worried about how my make-up looks or if my sides are bulging over the tops of my ultra low rise jeans.

You can write fast enough. If it worries you, go get a micro-cassette recorder like I did. I don't ever remember listening to those tapes even once. It gave me peace of mind. I think it's exciting to see you return to college. You are plenty smart enough. Have fun with it.

Sharon - You've raised a family, and you've been doing important, responsible work outside home. I think you can handle the challenges of a classroom just fine! Pulling for you and wishing you the best of luck; a little of that plus your smarts and your family's help will take you a long way. You're going to have a ball.

Sharon I am 42 and last Sept I went back to school myself. I took the summer off and I will be going back in a few weeks. I am going for legal sect, not brain surgery but challenging none the less. I have found it very rewarding and enjoyable. Buy yourself a mini tape recorded it might help take some of the pressure off. Good luck, and be proud of yourself.

Congratulations on going back to school! It's natural to be a bit nervous about it, but once you meet some people, you'll feel so much more at ease. Older students usually do much better than younger, because they're much more motivated and they're paying for it themselves. You'll probably be the one who ruins the grading curve for everyone else! ;-)

It's indeedy an interesting experience! We have a junior college down the street from us and I went back from time to time taking a class that interested me--or refresher stuff. I THRIVED in it. Took a local government class and got to have my boss (engineer) come in and talk to the "kids" about our suspension bridge project and how it worked with the local government, then another time took creative writing (wow that's different when you have 20 years of life experience behind you), and Spanish.

I found the instructors LOVE us older kids. Instructors always called one me cos I cared and took great notes :o). I loved being in class with the younger kids, too.

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
