Feelin' Grateful.......

I'm having one of those days where I tend to plunge under the surface and really think about everything going on. I just found out that my DS who is 49 has to have knee replacement surgery! I thought surely my Mom mistakenly used the word but after calling my DS it was clear she has a big surgery in front of her. Last fall she said her knee was aching a bit. She had torn cartilage repaired after a fall on some ice about 18 years ago so she thought she was beginning to develop arthritis in the knee. By spring when they took a trip to Disney World she was experiencing increasing pain. She has a complete gym in her basement but she has been unable do any steady exercising becuase she is in agony afterwards. While I was there for my SF's funeral she began having difficulty even walking and when she wore a pair of shoes with heels on the day of the funeral it was evident she needed to see her doctor. My sis is only 4'11" in height and she has worn heels all of her adult life because she is self-conscious of her short stature. For this she has paid dearly with painful bunions and now I suspect they have contributed to her knee wearing out early in life. The surgery is extensive and requires approximately 10 weeks of therapy to recover the use of the knee. I don't know about you but I seriously re-thinking my shoe choices. I am also feeling grafeful that I am able to move and exercise.

I'm very sorry to hear about your sister's uncoming surgery. She's so young! I was reading the other day that this type of surgery is happening younger and younger, partially because the boomers have been a generation of overdoers, but also because we're unwilling to settle for a lower quality of life. Where people used to wait until their 60's and 70's, they having knee and hip replacements in their 40's and 50's. Please keep us posted on when the surgery happens, so we can remember her in our prayers. I'm sure it will be fine, and the ordeal will be worth it when she has more mobility and less pain.

My BIL in MD needs both knees replaced, along with back surgery, and he has had some good success to relieve pain in the meantime with magnetic knee braces and a fantastic cream made of cetyl myristoleate (CM Cream). There's also an oral formula, but the topical cream seems to really help.

Best of luck to your sister!

I hope your sister does well. Although surgery would be my last choice, they're having great success with knee surgery these days.

Best of luck to her.

God bless Easy Spirit, Aerosoles, and Birkenstock especially. My feet have had a wonderful summer off from closed toes, pointy toes, high heels, medium heels, slingbacks, slides, super-flat sandals and the like. When I wasn't wearing any of the brands I mentioned, I just went barefoot.

I wonder how I'm going to cram my li'l (ok - big) piggies back into boots, pumps, etc. I never thought I'd say this, but I might have to resort to Birki's with socks! If that happens, I promise there won't be any film, unless "What Not to Wear" gets a hold of me!

Ten weeks of therapy? How long after surgery will that start? Your poor sister. The only consolation is that it will be over before the snow and ice arrive. I can understand why she felt she needed to wear heels - I have several petite friends who did the same thing and are in agony now if they put on anything other than flats. I'm not petite, but I never thought twice about wearing 3" or higher heels. How silly we were!

Remember Joan and David shoes? I was a big fan of their dressier styles and once bought three pair of the same shoe style in 3 different colors because I loved the shoes so much and they went with everything in my closet at the time! My Imelda days are over; I'm really fussy about the shoes I buy now, and won't make a purchase until I've walked around the store for about 10 minutes to make sure they're comfortable. They cost too darn much money for them to turn into another pair of "sitting-down" shoes.

I had trouble with my feet for about a year, still don't know what caused it, but I think it was dancing in heels for hours after not being used to wearing them. I started buying nothing but Born, Dansko by Soleil, Joseph Seibel, Clarks, and another European brand I can't remember. I especially loved the Dansko ones. Got some modified loafer type shoes in woven leather (a favorite) in black and in brown, they were so comfy. I still wear all of them sometimes even though I can wear regular shoes now. I wear heels for special occasions only. I can remember wearing the high ones to work every day even when I had to walk blocks downtown on those darn concrete sidewalks. No more!

I see Joan and David shoes in stores here (Their Circa line is cool.), and in fact, they have a pair I'm considering for a suit of mine. I still love beautiful heels, but it's rare that I buy them.

Margie, I sure hope your sister gets better. That does sound like a serious operation and I understand your concerns. Being a short person myself I understand the need for wearing the heels, but I must admitt as I have gotten older I wear them less and less. I find if I wear heels, I perfer the chunky type. Please keep us posted on how she does, and I hope her recovery goes well.

Thanks Everyone for you kind words and concern for my sister. I'm not quite sure when she will have the surgery. It was such a shock when the doctor told her that she asked him if she could wait until January to have the surgery. He said that was up to her. She is so uncomfortable I'm betting she won't make it to January. She said the pain meds make her loopy so she only takes then when she is going to bed for the night. Her idea was to get the holidays over with before she was laid up. I'm thinking have it now and be well by the holidays. I'll keep you posted.

That is too bad about your sister! I'm not short, but I've been guilty of wearing those 3" stiletto heels myself although not for many years. I still have a couple pair of them and when I'm feeling funky, I get them out and put them on and remember why I don't wear them anymore.

Nope. These days, if it doesn't say "Nike" on the back, I am not interested. Hope your sis gets her knee fixed soon.

Margie, I hope your sister gets thru her surgery ok and that you get up there in time for it. Yes, high heels are bad on feet and legs & boy, don't I know that now! I am so looking forward to fall & even winter when I can wear my boots! No high heels for moi!

Will be keeping you & your sister in my thoughts & prayers.

Hugs,

Kat
