up to your knee weighs? I actually try to balance on the scale and I am down a few lbs even with the cast. At least there is an up side to this whole thing. I am trying not to think that I am losing muscle and that is why I weigh less. This crutch thing takes a lot of energy, especially going up and down stairs. Even taking a bath is a project.

I am craving corn muffins. I wish I could balance enough to make them. I may give it a try later today. I will leave the mess for the family to clean up....LOL!!

Have a good one all.

I don't know first-hand, but I can ask my mom. Years ago, she broke her foot in two places about three months after she retired when her high-heeled shoes caught a pothole on the sidewalk and down she went.

Imagine with all that extra weight-training you're doing how many more lbs will drop off the scale.

Hope you feel better soon - please be careful while in the cast and on the crutches!

I broke my foot in March 2001 - much the same way as Donna's mom did, but I was wearing *tennis shoes* and getting exercise with the family when a pothole wouldn't turn my foot loose. I had one of those removable supports along with the love-a-ly ortho shoe. I was out of shape at that time, but I know I built some arm strength with the crutches, and I worked up a sweat. I also came up with many creative ways to carry things and get around the kitchen to cook - namely a chair with "culinary glide"... caster wheels!

Allison was younger, and she was a great help grocery shopping. I'd hoist her up from my seated position in one of those electric carts, and she could reach the top shelf and grab whatever item I was describing to her.

Grace,

I don't know how much a cast weighs-I can only imagine. But I did see DD getting around on crutches with a knee immobolizer. We had to get innovative with the showering issue-it did involve a lawn chair! She also used the stair method that you've been using-not a comfortable experience.

Hope your family is treating you well! Take care of yourself and follow the doctor's orders!

Hugs,

Susan

I think my mom used a lawn chair also, and 30-gallon trash bags with really big elastics to fairly good effect. I also remember her complaining about incessant itching in the plaster cast. Fortunately, she was only in that cast for a couple of weeks and went into one of those removable/adjustable casts for several more weeks. She never mastered crutches, and couldn't coordinate using a cane (she's a fabulous dancer, so I couldn't understand the lack of coordination issue which, BTW, appears to be genetic). Mostly she hopped - and avoided hot liquids. She stayed with my sister and her family; this was before the little ones were born, so my mom's biggest helps during this time were my oldest niece and the dog, my BIL's uncle, and DH and I when we visited a couple of times a week.
