Went to the vitamin store today!

After my walk this morning I went to the vitamin store here in town. I am always so afraid to walk into these type of places. Short, out of shape lady with all those tone healthy guys and gals. Well I bit the bullet and decided what the heck. I spoke with Mike the owner, Body Builder, "no doubt". I explained my fustrations and what I have been doing. He said I am on the right track. He said it can take as long as 6 months for your metabolism to kick in. Great!!!!!! He told me to increase my protien intake. Stick with 6 meals a day like I have. Keep it as low carb as possible but do not, do no carb. Try and pump up my exercise routine to an hour total. He thought going to Curves everyday would not hurt but understood the consept of having a day off for those muscles. Of coarse the icing.....stay away from the cookies and chips. Duh! I purchased a Protien powder called Designer Whey. You mix it with skim milk just like the Curves shake. It has less sugar, more protien, and about the same calories. I will give it a try and I plan on taking it in the morning as a hopeful boost to start my day. I just wish I could do a full hour without killing myself. I find it difficult doing the 45 minutes. But maybe just increase it to 50 minutes this week and go up in 5 minute plots. How do some of you do 1 to 2 hours at a time. How do you fit that into your busy lives, with family, and work? Curious minds need to know! Thanks, its you guys that keep me going with the hopes this will start to work.

Deb, I've used Designer Whey off-and-on for a couple of years and really like it. The praline flavor is especially good. Adds a little ummph! to the taste. I add some water, flaxseed oil, ground flaxseed, frozen fruit, SteviaPlus (sweetener), and sometimes some "green" powder concentrate to make a good, healthy smoothie.

Aren't you glad you were bold enough to step inside the store? It pays to ask people who know their stuff.

Deb - My life isn't as busy as most of the women here. DH is undemanding and helpful (can't tell time, but he does laundry better than I do and can even manage a meal once in a while), and we have no kids, so I have plenty of time to myself once I get home from work. Mornings you're seeing your kids off to school, and at night you're once again doing for your family, so your best workout time has to come between 10 and 3 and you have to share that time with other things you have to get done. You just need to carve out time for yourself to do the workout you like best, eat to keep your energy from flagging, and learn ways to tweak that workout when it starts to lose its effectiveness. Trying to do 2 hours every time out may be unrealistic for you. So do the 30 minutes, push to 45 when you can, keep adding time on that you're comfortable with, and don't forget the cool-down. Mr. and Ms. America at the vitamin store aren't my role models; the 40+ yr olds here are.

The issue for me is more an energy than finding the time challenge. I don't know how I do 90-120 minutes of exercise at a time (haven't done it lately with feeling so poorly, but I'm working back up to it quickly); I just know once I've been at it for 20 minutes or so, I'm going to push through. Even if the results aren't showing on the outside, I know good things are going on inside.

I've been doing this seriously now for about 18 months and my scale fluctuates between showing some progress and back to my starting point. But I still feel better than I did before I started working out. Exercise is more habit now than I thought it ever would be, but I still have my lazy days - I can blow off a workout with the best of them!

Some days I just don't fit it in. And some days I have to let other things go.I think it just comes down to making time for yourself. But it also is not about making yourself crazy if you can't do it.An hour workout is great but if 30 mins is all you have that is great also.I admire you so much for going back to school.I know your days must be so busy and I give you so much credit for the time you do get in for a workout. No more of that "short, out of shape" stuff young lady!!!!
