Training for a race?

I posted yesterday that I'm thinking about entering a race, but my message got bumped down. So here's what's up, and a Q. I ran my second-ever 4 mile run yesterday evening, with some sprints even, and it was easier than the first time I ran 4 miles just this past Wednesday.

I've upped my mileage in running from 2-3 miles to 4 miles because I'm contemplating running in the Governor's Cup 8K race November 1st. 8K, 5 miles. My hairstylist, who recently resumed running, is signing up and has just about talked me into it. I'd wanted to start doing some charity races - my goal is to finish, and I don't care if I come in last (my stylist and I are on the same page with that, so we'll probably run together, LOL!). I'd hoped to do a 5K first which I know I could do, but it looks like the 8K will be the next opportunity. I won't be able to run the course before the race because it's not where I'd feel secure running on my own - I do much better running a route the second time, but The Cus has already said he doesn't want me running by myself downtown - and I don't have anyone to watch Allison even if it were feasible. I will be able to drive the course to see what it looks like. With running 3x a week, do y'all think I can get ready? Any training advice from our regular runners to increase my stamina and endurance? Again, the challenge is on myself to finish, not racing against anybody or the clock.

And just think, I didn't even start running until May of this year. The running bug has really bitten me... along with mosquitos, gnats, chiggers....

Here's a link I found on Runner's World Magazine website that I think is a good one.

Good for you! I ran my first race, a 12k with absolutely no preparation at all (7.5 miles)..DUMB! Didn't even have on running shoes. If you're running 4 miles right now you will have no problems at all with an 8k.

Racing is a lot of fun, the adrenaline, the people, the cheering. I love it. I just found I can't do both (Jazzercise and training for races) if I want to be able to walk. My knees were killing me when I was overdoing it.

You run your first race just for the experience (and you learn A LOT! LOL)...then you find you get hooked. And you'll do just fine.

Have you looked at the racing training programs on cool running.com? I'm sure they have one for 8 k training too. I have several training books if I could just find them, but the library had all of them too. They give you strategies and training guides.

Most of all--you have FUN with your first race.
