You should make good progress if you have all that time to read. I'm still working on "The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet," then will start on "Alkalize or Die." After those I can start on the two new political books dealing with our values and Christianity. I am a notorious highlighter when I read, so I can find important passages more easily when I go back for reference.

I have that headache that started this afternoon, so I rented "A Guy Thing" romantic comedy video and am going to watch that tonight after a hot soak.

Have a good evening.

There's no doubt in my mind that sodas are acidic - but how "bad", even after reading those quotes, I'm still not sure. The "Balance Diet" quote was enlightening on naturally occurring acids and the various forms it takes - thanks. It's interesting that acid can clean out acidic wastes. Seems backwards, but maybe that's one of those physical mysteries we don't fully understand. Carrot juice produces phosphorus - I wonder why it's the bad guy in soft drinks?

On the other hand, the quotes from "Reverse Aging" .... I couldn't help but notice the author's reliance on speculation and hearsay. The "tooth submerged in soda" claim is similar to one that has been circulating in urban legend e-mail, and it leads the reader to believe that you can sit in front of a glass of soda with a tooth in it and watch it decay before your eyes because of the acid. It's an incomplete claim at least, and perhaps mostly false: The decay would happen slowly, and it would happen moreso because of the high sugar content. The same thing happens with children's teeth if the child is allowed to sleep with a bottle of apple juice, milk, or Kool-aid, due to the sugars sitting on the teeth overnight, night after night (which has been proven). In the paragraph on an experiment with three groups of mice, the author simultaneously theorizes, writes the experiment and draws a conclusion (using "we can all guess" no less)... without ever entering a laboratory. When the author talks about how much alkalinity it would take to neutralize soda, are there similar statements regarding other acidic foods and beverages for proper comparison (not that you'd want to neutralize Vitamin C or the phosphorus produced by carrot juice)? Granted, I've not read the book, but I can't help question the author's methodology just in those few quotes.

I've not done the acid/alkaline research you have and the subject of detox is not something I know much about (probably obvious to you, LOL!), but I've researched sodas for other reasons. The main "bad" thing I've found about them is that the phosphorus in them hinders absorption of certain nutrients, specifically calcium, which then ends up passing through the body as waste. And of course, kidney stones are calcium deposits, and lack of calcium contributes to bone loss. I've cut back on sodas for that reason, and never drink sodas with sugar (just the thought turns my stomach), because water and water-based drinks are better. I do know that artificially produced additives can have the same molecular structure as naturally occuring chemicals, especially flavorings, but I've never heard a solid explanation of why one is good and the other isn't. At this point I don't plan on giving sodas up entirely.

I couldn't reproduce the whole book, so all I can tell you is that you should read the books if you want to know more. The problem is with the acidic levels of soft drinks (particularly colas) and other foods, and you would have to understand the full research and results dealing with the effects of acidity on the body to understand the full impact of the quotes. Artificial sweeteners have their own set of problems, which I won't take the time or space to go into here. You should get the full scoop if you want to see the big picture. After that, whatever choice you make is your right and privilege.
