Have you ever noticed how it sometimes seems easier for people to react to someone's sad or upsetting news than it is to happy or uplifting news? Any theories about that?

I think when we see upsetting news, we want to jump in and help our friends.

So, why aren't we eager to share joy with people we care about too?

I agree with Phyllis thought that we have a need to run to the rescue when those we care about have a problem.Maybe we feel less needed when something good is going on so there is no sense of urgency. When someone on this board posts a problem I usually think "I can relate to that".But when someone posts"I lost 5 pounds" I have to work thru "why the heck aren't I doing that???"Takes longer to get thru that and respond.Any particular reason for this deep thought on a Monday morning?Maybe something incredible will happen to me today and I'll test the thought :)I just got on the scales so I know it woun't be that 5 lb deal.

Reason for the thought? -- Just a trend I've noticed ever since I've been posting on boards, sometimes more than others, and finally decided to ask if anyone had any thoughts as to why they think it works out that way. Has anyone else noticed it at times too? Maybe it's just human nature. Enquiring minds want to know. ;-)

Yes, I've noticed that very thing before. And think there may be lots of reasons for it.

Bad news is just that...bad news. People need support emotionally when bad things happen so we have programmed ourselves to respond more forcefully to negative events. Also, think about this, we tend to remember negative events more clearly and for longer periods of time than good events. It's not right or wrong, it's just our nature as human beings.

Good news is great!...most of the time unless you're jealous or feeling put upon by the world which I think a lot of people are in these times of uncertain economy. It's wonderful when your friend gets a promotion or a raise or announces a new baby is on the way. But it's also human nature to immediately compare their life to your own and wonder how they rate such a great thing and you don't after all that hard work. It's how we think and how we interact with our environment. It's not right or wrong, it just is. Yes, it's childish. Sometimes it's just hard to be happy for someone when it has a negative impact on you...whether that impact is real or perceived.

Just MHO.
