I just read through some of the responses to Calcium via Ice Cream could make the fat go away – I thought I was going to split a seam, laughing so much! But seriously, I have a major problem with calcium. It seems like my system is intolerable to those chocolate chews, and other assorted supplements, including Tums. I do worry about not getting enough calcium and turning into the humpback of North Carolina. Any suggestions?

Here's a list of calcium sources --

Foods: dairy foods, salmon (with bones), sardines, seafood, dark green leafy veggies, almonds, asparagus, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, broccoli, buttermile, cabbage, carob, cheese, collards, dandelion greens, dulse, figs, filberts, goat's milk, kale, kelp, milk mustard greens, oats, prunes, sesame seeds, soybeans, tofu, turnip greens, watercress, whey, and yogurt.

Herbs: alfalfa, burdock root, cayenne, chamomile, chickweed, chicory, dandelion, eyebright, fennel seed, fenugreek, flaxseed, hops, horsetail, kelp, lemongrass, mullein, nettle, oat straw, paprika, parsley, peppermint, plantain, raspberry leaves, red clover, rose hips, sherpherd's purse, violet leaves, yarrow, and yellow dock.

I think weight bearing exercise has been shown to be even more effective in preventing osteoporosis than calcium, although it doesn't replace the need for it.

Cayenne? I can't imagine eating enough cayenne to make it a viable calcium source! Ye-gads! Dragon breath 24/7...

I can't either. I guess they mean that if you add it to your food every little bit adds up. You can also get capsules of things like that. I have some Capsaicin (cayenne) capsules for when I have a cold to help fight it, open my sinuses, etc. It's also good for arthritis, digestion, and a number of other things. Capsules are a good way to take a concentrated amount without getting dragon breath.

Deb

Calcium is an issue with me too especially since the results of a bone density test. I've been taking a calcium supplement (per dr's advise) for a number of years and try to eat as many calcium rich foods as possible and weight bearing exercises. I know I had posted about this concern awhile ago and Donna had done a great post in reply about the exercises that are most beneficial in the battle against osteoporosis. Seems like we have quite a few things in common!

Great idea! I printed this list out as reminder that there are other sources to choose from besides the tablets and chews.

Thanks Rhonda!

I suppose you're right about that. Every little bit helps.
