Hello everyone!

I joined a Gym 2 months ago and do weights and cardio 3 times a week. I have lost 14LBs! My weight loss has slowed but Im still shrinking. Wore a 14 and now I can fit into a size 10. I started a 160LBs and now weigh 146. Im not complaining but I could swear the last time I wore a size 10 I weighed 125. Im confused? Is it because muscle is denser that fat? I don't diet! I think diets are bogus, instead I eat what I want but less of it. I gave up 3 cans of coke a day! I drink diet instead. Is diet soda still bad? I also drink propel fitness water and gatorade but mostly diet soda. Thanks and glad I found this board.

Carolynn-

Congratulations on your weight loss and yes, muscle is more dense than fat.

Hi Carolynn. Welcome.

You didn't mention your age, but as we've all found out from each other here on the 40+ board, no matter the weight, our body shape changes as we age. Clothing size isn't always the best representation of our healthy weight and size.

Glad you're here. Sounds like you're doing well with your eating and your workouts. You'll find tons of help and support here.

Sassy

Hi Carolynn and welcome the board. Congrats on your success so far. Look forward to hearing more from you.

By the way, nothing beats good ol' water for hydration. I have diet soda every day too though.

Welcome Carolyn and congrats on your weight loss! If you're doing portion control (which is what I do), it is a kind of diet - that's what Weight Watchers and Readers' Digest ChangeOne are based upon. I drink diet sodas as well, though I'm drinking more water these days. Carbonated drinks are thought to hinder the absorption of calcium into your body - a friend of mine who had kidney stones was told by her doctor not to drink sodas, and also calcium loss contributes to osteoporosis. I haven't given sodas up entirely, but instead have incorporated more milk and water into my diet. A lot of writings contradict one another, and I believe you can raise your stress level if you fretted over and counted everything that "they" say you should. One link someone shared here recently mentioned that the area of body science and nutrition has a lot of beliefs looking for theories and facts - I put stock in that statement.

On clothes... I sew as a hobby. I've also wondered why I can fit into a size 6 or 8 today when I used to where size 10 when I was 10 pounds lighter in high school. The Wall Street Journal has had several articles over the last few years uncloaking the deception of women's sizes. A woman wearing a size 8 today has the same measurements as a woman who wore a size 12 fifty years ago, and the expensive designer labels are the worst at dropping sizes to give their customers a false sense about their body size. There is no standard for manufacturers of women's clothes, and some retailers have switched to 0,1,2 and 3 - pray tell, what's the difference between that and S-M-L and XL?! Anyway. Sewing sizes have remained steady through the years, and if you sew, you really do have to go by the measurements. I sewed myself a size 8 skirt a few years ago because that's what I thought I wore, and it was TIGHT! These days, I sew size 12 bathing suits from patterns following my actual measurements, even though I wear a size 6, 8 or 10 in stores depending on the brands. Not exactly inspiring, is it?!

Hello Carolynn, and welcome to the board. Congrats on the weiht you have lost. Great job, about the size thing, well I guess our bodies do change. I type this with a tear in my eye. After 3 kids I will never be what I once was but hey that is life. You need to be proud of how well you have done and what you are continuing to do. I agree what the others said about the diet soda. Water, you should be having 6 to 8 glasses a day, do you? Maybe try and have 1 can at night with dinner as a treat. I only have soda at parties, and I find that water or Crystal light is my main stay for drinks. Lots of continued luck and we look forward to hearing more from you!
