Another good idea is to only buy candy that you don't like and aren't tempted by.

Of course this only works until the kids bring their candy home and DH and I have to "go thru and make sure everything is okay". Seriously, though, we only snatch a piece here and there. And we do weed out a lot of stuff. DH takes it all into work. What happens to it after it leaves here...I don't ask!

I just read an article in one of my mags yesterday that talked about the need for not feeling deprived. If we go into the Holidays saying we're not going to eat any of our favorite things, we've already lost the battle. But if we go into the Holidays saying we are going to make smart choices on portion control and be aware of what we are eating and drinking, we have a better shot at sticking with it. I would say that gaining a couple of pounds over the Holidays, after sticking with our exercising and keeping control of our eating, is better than gaining 10 pounds after we binge and just say, oh, the heck with it. Having a plan, like Phyllis suggests with not buying Halloween candy until the last minute, is definitely the best way to approach the Holidays. I think it will also be very important for us to talk about our plans, concerns, etc., as we move into the Holiday season.

Great idea, Phyllis.

Hugs.

Great post, Phyllis! I won't be getting the big bag of Halloween candy 'till day before. Then, I think I will get stuff I don't really like - Danny loves Reese's which I don't care for . . .

Thanks for posting this, Phyllis!

Great post-unfortunately too late! But my stuff is stashed and to be quite honest I haven't had a candy urge in quite awhile and have been doing pretty well with eliminating a lot of the sugary stuff out of my diet. So for now I'm safe.

I'm pretty lucky about Halloween these days. I live in the country and we don't get any kids at our place. So, I don't usually buy any Halloween candy although my MIL has been known to send a bag of candy corn home with DH. That stuff makes my teeth ache it's so sweet.

No, I don't keep candy in the house at all. If I want a candy bar, I go to town and buy one. I don't usually get past the end of the driveway before I don't want it anymore...LoL

I love your idea Phyllis!

I'm determined not to nibble my way through the candy this year; candy simply isn't an option. There are lots of kids in the neighborhood, but we got home after the early rush of the little ones and missed most of it, so I sent most of the leftover stuff to work with DH. Maybe this year we'll just avoid all of it and go out to eat, OR I'll go to my sister's house directly from work and go out with the kids and her, and DH can drive up and arrive whenever traffic allows him to. Don't mean to sound like a Halloween Scrooge, but if I must, I must.

As I looked at my calendar to see my notes from last year:

"13 bags of candy 2002" which translates how many bags of candy I need to buy for this year. Which also means a little mouse named Debra managed to get at most corners of those 2002 bags for samples :o). So how many do I really have to buy?

I have to buy NONE this year. We're off on our sunny California (ok probably rainy but I'm an optimist) vacation for the week of Halloween. By now I would've bought most of my bags of candy, by now I would've downed quite a few samples.

So----this post would've been too late for me Phyllis LOL...I have to stock up and start buying in September. Next year remind us in September to NOT buy candy til almost Halloween. :o)

I do pretty good at staying away from H'ween candy, though I usually buy a bag of Mary Janes and munch on them. Guess what's in the cabinet right now?!

It's Christmas candy that I have the worst time with, because the holiday season starts as soon as T'giving ends. Gotta have Christmas cheer throughout those 4-5 weeks, right?

Good post, but..........what do you do with the stuff the kids bring home? I bought stuff already but I made smarter choices. I got little bags of Teddy Grams (cookies)and mine bags of Snyders Pretzels. I will not buy candy, because as you said I seem to snack. Thanks for the post Phyllis, I just need to stay completely away from that candy, before, during, and after!

We go thru all 3 of the kids bags, even the 13 year old...who is probably too old to go this year. I don't think he went last year, now that I think about it. Anyway, we go thru their bags before they are allowed to eat anything out of them. We take out the real tooth-stickin' stuff and stuff that isn't packaged well, put it all in a bag and DH takes into work. He's not a big candy eater either (neither of us are) so it's not an issue. Unless, of course, we're talking 3 muskateers. My absolute, can not turn down favorite.

"We all know how easy it is to grab a fun size snickers, M&M, whatever."Boy that line spoke to me!How many times do I walk past a bowl of candy and without thinking reach in and get something??Way too often!!Great post , great thoughts!
