Dizzy after treadmill

Hi....my name is Donna and my husband bought a treadmill. The first two times I used it I was dizzy when I finished. This is what I did and I was wondering if you know what I'm doing wrong, by the way I'm over 45. What I did was I walked for 2 minutes at 1.5 speed and 6 minutes at 2.5 and then 2 minutes at 1.5 again and then I stopped. When I stepped off the treadmill I got dizzy. I don't know the correct way to do this (time and speed). Could someone please help me?? thanks...

I would definitely rule out all medical issues first, but I always felt wobbly after getting off the treadmill the first few times I used it. Even now, if I haven't used it for a few weeks, I feel wobbly and dizzy when I first get off. It's like getting your sea legs and land legs.

Welcome to the board! I agree that if it continues, you might want to get a medical opinion. If there are no other physiological causes, the first two things that came to my mind were: 1) could you have been doing shallow breathing that might have caused you to hyperventilate; and 2) might you have an inner ear problem (even just wax sometimes) that could have been aggravated when you were getting your land legs back after you got off the treadmill?

Hope it was just a one shot incident. Keep us posted.

This is why I don't use treadmills. I always get dizzy when I get off them. I'm fine while they're going, but as soon as I get off I feel seasick.

Hi....thanks for your reply, my husband did tell me later that I'm probally not breathing right, that I should take deeper breaths...whatever that means so I'll give that a try. It is good to know that I'm not the only one. Thanks again Donna

Hi Phyllis, Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I weigh 167 pounds and am 5 foot 4 inches so I do need to lose some weigh, 20 pounds would be nice. The second time that I did walk it was half an hour after dinner. I have walked in the pass (4 miles) but it was on a bike trail, took me 1 and a half hour, no problem there. I've exercise in the past so I'm not new to that. I've never have had motion sickness. After I had posted this message my husband had said that I wasn't breathing right and to take longer and deeper breaths. I feel I wasn't having problems with breathing while I was walking. Now, I have been diagnose with asthma and I take a preventive medicine I take in the morning and have not had an attack in years so I feel it wasn't that problem. I'm thinking now maybe I didn't cool down with slow walking longer. I just don't know the rule of thumb with walking. The treadmill we got did not come with suggestions, maybe you have one? Thanks again for answering me. Donna

Hi Rhonda, oh wow, that is what my husband said that I wasn't breathing deeper and longer. I do have asthma but haven't had a problem in years, I'm on a preventive medicine I do in the morning(inhaler). It is good to know that other people that walk on a treadmill also get wobbly, I just thought it was me. I also think maybe I didn't slow pace my walking longer at the end, I guess 2 minutes is not long enough. So I'll give that a try. Thanks again, Donna

Welcome to the Fit Over Forty, Donna! I wish I had advice on this, but I walk outdoors. I am dizzy when I step off a treadmill for a few seconds. I don't know why either.

Hope to see you post with us more!

Hi Donna, and welcome to the board.

I know the feeling you are talking about I think. I get a little dizzy everytime I step off a treadmill. I think it's just my inner ear and brain not quite meshing right. This is coming from a person who can't stand on the end of a dock with a fishing rod without feeling like she's going to fall in the water.
