on keeping fit and healthy during the holidays? Is that what you all discussed at chat? If so, share, please.

Good thing we're not tested on chat!We talked about this I know but I don't have any real tips.I'm trying to get my extra weight off now so I don't add to it over the holidays.Right now I'm trying really hard to eat a cleaner diet.Don't want to deprive myself but know it's time to do much better.I read an article the other day that said when it comes to getting in shape diet is 100% of it!!!I believe exercise is important too.But I know some days my diet completely undermines the exercise I do.

I love the holidays and don't really get too stressed and overeat from that. I overeat because I get busy and go too long without food.Or I'm with friends or family and eat mindlessly.I'm trying hard now to have healthy food choices on hand and really think before putting food in my mouth.I was amazed the other day how many times I grabbed chips each time I went thru the kitchen.I love chips and have no restraint.I'm into day 2 of no chips...it's killing me!!!!

What did we discuss in chat?Well I know that Phyllis talked about getting things done early so there is less stress. Because of that I'm going to get my cards next week and not leave it til later. And I usually hate wrapping so last year I used gift bags which helped alot. But this year I'm thinking of getting a bow maker and just having fun with the wrapping.I'm also going to do it before Dec 23rd.

Kat, what's wrong with your back?Hope it feels better soon.I'm kind of worried that you're going to bed so hungry. Are you sure you're eating enough?????I know; nag , nag...sorry just concerned.

Thanks, Princess! You have lots of good tips, expecially the bow maker - I need one of those - where ya' gonna get one? I bet Hobby Lobby or Michael's out here will have one. I love wrapping presents, but I'm not great at it. I need lessons from the Dillard's wrappers.

I never thought I ate mindlessly till my house was burglarized. As I sat waiting for the police to show up (2 1/2 hrs. later), I ate at least 3 or 4 small bags of Sugar Babies. Chips sound wonderful right now, as does a good sandwich. I have some delicious Ruffles Natural Sea Salt 1/3 less calories (or is that fat?) potato chips at home I've been munching on for a couple of weeks. Those chips may go stale so I may have a light sandwich and chips for dinner. I've had so many light and healthy hot meals lately, that I could use a break. It's okay to eat some chips now and then. My problem with the holidays is that I go to alot of open houses, buffets, banquets, etc. and of course I have to eat some of what I cook! I used to abstain from even tasting my holiday cookies or candies back when I was tiny, but now I have a hard time not having a little bite. Problem is during the holidays all of those little bites add up. I need to work 3 hours of fitness in like Deb does is the only way I can see not gaining any weight.

I'm afraid I contributed more of what NOT to do than what you should do. Rob got 2 bags of candy yesterday, I hadn't eaten lunch, so I ate two of those. This was after I passed up buying Halloween candy at Costco Tuesday. I'm putting the blame on him. ;-)

I did get my return address labels and seals the other day, and my cards are ordered, but haven't come yet. I have my gift wrap and probably enough bows. I buy the kind that are already made or make the curly ones out of several colors of curling ribbon. I worked giftwrap at a department store to help out when one of their people was gone (back in the '70's), but I've always liked to wrap. Love to send cards too.

My problem isn't so much eating at gatherings as it is when I'm alone. I have strong cravings for sweets and other carbs, and if I'm not occupied with something, it's much harder to not give into them. I, too, have thunder thighs. It's just the way I'm built. Even when 4's were big on me, and I was very slim and in good shape, my thighs were proportionally larger, but muscular. Now, I just want to

RHONDA, Honey, you do NOT have thunder thighs! I've seen more than 1 picture of you (& one in a shorter dress!) and you do not have them.

My lower back hurts frequently - used to think only when AF nears but it is from standing. It will always hurt - I do need to get those magnets don't I? I think I still have some Epsom salts - that sounds good. I hope your muscle spasms go away.

I love getting wrapping and other ideas from my Southern Living Christmas books. I buy them used at a bookstore - in mint condition. I'm missing 2002! Someone must have snatched that one up! I'll have to check and see if it's on sale at Books A Million yet. Anyway, I love wrapping presents, but usually have to copy someone else's ideas as I'm not that creative! I wish I could do all of the projects in these books. I bet your home looks beautiful during the holidays. I had fun making my mini pumpkin topiaries and finishing a fall wreath. I think it would be fun working with flowers or designing home decor products.

Tonight, I ate a little more than normal and since I'm off, I will be fine when I go to bed. I'm looking forward to 8 hours of sleep tonight! The reason I'm hungry when I go to be is I just don't like to eat after 6 p.m. and I'm eating lighter these days to get these last lbs. off before Thanksgiving.

Truly, my thighs are heavier. Even as a child I had larger thighs. When I work out with weights, I can't use heavy weights with my legs or my quads get really developed. I never could wear Calvin Klein jeans because the waist was too big and the thighs were too tight (now the waist would probably be snug too). IF

My strategies to include:

  • Eating all of my favorite holiday foods, every one of them...but just in bites instead of 2nd and 3rd helpings.

Deb, you've obviously put a lot of thought into that answer and I think it is a good one.

"(with bites of what I love)"

Sounds like the 3-tastes rule! I'm so trying to stick with that, and it's working. Why eat 3 cups of ice cream, get all mad at and frustrated with myself afterward, and have to have three sizes in my closet? As clothes start to swim on me, I'm going to give them away, no matter how much I like them; I'll also be giving away the disincentive to start eating 3 cups of ice cream again instead of 3 teaspoonsful.

I'm happy to say that my 3 favorite dresses from Chico's - the straight knits - are starting to get gapey around the neckline at the front and back and the armholes (they're sleeveless). They're crew-neck styles, so there's nothing potentially embarrassing going on, but I am starting to look a little lost in them (one of them must be from fabric that was at the bottom of the pile during cutting - it's quite roomy, even at my hips, and it's the same size as the other two).

I just happened to find 2 gift certificates in my bureau drawers when I was transferring stuff to the new furniture, so I can buy with a little bit of abandon the next time I head out to the stores. There's a premium outlet shopping center a few miles south of my house (Margie - the Wrentham Premium Outlets), so I could drop by there also for some more stylish looks at, I hope, better than retail prices.

Yay!

Kat,

For the holidays I'm going to try to keep in mind that the feast does not have to start with Halloween and go through the new year. I am going to try to keep the candy in the house to a minimum. I haven't purchased any Halloween candy yet. We will get it on the 31st and yes I'm guilty of not choosing my favorite candies. For Thanksgiving I am going to cook everything I like and eat as much as I want for the Thanksgiving meal. My homemade bread/sausage stuffing is my favorite and it's loaded with fat so I will enjoy it that day and not eat it after. I'll stick to having the turkey breast with a light salad while everyone else in the family continues to gorge on the feast. I plan to do the same thing for Christmas. I don't want to feel deprived but I think we make the mistake of overeating from Nov 1st -Jan. 1st. then we wonder why we have gained weight and feel yucky at the first of the year.

I loved reading the posts about gift wrapping. This is one of my favorite holiday rituals. I wrap each gift with loving care. I don't use the stick on bows but I love to buy every type of curling ribbon I can get my hands on and even find some lovely ribbons at places like Hobby Lobby and Micheals. I love to be creative but I'm not into things like making my own wrapping paper. I'm thinking of Rhonda here...COSTCO sells the most wonderful wrapping papers. They are the heavy weight paper and they make a gift look so rich. I need to ask DH if they are out yet. I've already purchased my Christmas cards and need to start working on choosing a graphic to print on them. For years I used stamps to decorate my Christmas card envelopes but the last few years I've found cute clipart that I've personalized and printed on the outside of my envelopes.

Kat, is there any way we can get a photo of you with your new haircut? I'd love to see it? Take your digital to work and e-mail it to one of the girls here who can post it!

Thanks for helping me get in the mood for the holidays! Margie:)

Donna,

I know the place. We stopped there last year on our way back from Maine. DH and I would have left tomorrow for our week in Mass. I'm know right now I'm not ready to come up and enjoy myself but I am experiencing a feeling of missing my annual trip. I know that by next October I'll be itching more than usual to get up there and spend a part of my week doing some good New England shopping. I think I'm going to sit with the LL Bean catalog this weekend and order a few things I had hoped to purchase on our trip. I'm going to head to the garden shop early tomorrow morning and get my fall flowers so I can spend a good day working in the yard. We have been experiencing a hint of Fall weather here and I've even seen a few trees that are turning. This is quite rare here.

Have you got all your new furniture yet?

Margie :)
