I know that our politicians want us to all believe that our economy is recovering and they need Americans to continue spending to keep the economy moving but I do not believe that it is improving. Just within my own family my Son was laid off and can only find temp/contract work. The companies will only hire for specific jobs. They hire and lay off frequently. They tell the employees it is the only way the company will survive. My SIL will be out of work November 15th. Seimens (sp?) is moving the entire business to India to cut costs. My DH who works for COSTCO has seen his daily work schedule cut by 1 hour yet they are expected to complete the same amount of work they did with the additional hour. They have been told they have to do this to keep the store on stable ground financially. Not to mention their health and life benefits have been cut this year to save money too. My DD works for a member owned country club they are loosing members left and right. She tells me they usually loose 2-3 members a month and pick up new ones to replace them. This month they are loosing 16 and only have one new member coming in. Every person leaving says they can no longer affort the luxury. She says they seem genuinely sad they have to resign. I work for a excellent school district here in Texas and we are just watching the budgets get slashed because state and federal budgets have been cut and Dear Georges education vouchers and Robin Hood plan has cut deeply into the meat of well off school districts. I keep hearing that the economy is improving but I can't see it in my life.
Most of the news media has had only negative things to report about the economy for a long time. It's been only recently that some of the mainstream ones are, what appears to be, grudgingly admitting that the major economic indicators are showing signs of a turn-a-round. That doesn't mean there aren't still problems in some areas of the economy and more in some parts of the country than others, but it is encouraging
I agree with you about any president would have had a difficult time withstanding the effects of 9/11 and I'll be thrilled for the economy to take a positive up-turn. I'm not anti-George just maybe a bit frustrated with politicians in general.
