Hi, all. I'm a 42-year-old mom of 2 (age 3 and 6) and I've been looking around for an active message board to join where I can share my workout ups and downs and efforts to reach my goal -- ot lose 50 pounds. I joined a Y in August and since then I've become utterly obsessed with fitness (which is how I do everything: obsession!). I'm trying to make changes in what I eat very slowly, since that's my downfall. I'd like to take a full year to lose the 50 pounds, or even more, as long as the changes that bring it about are permanent changes!
I'm extremely out of condition. In fact, before I started working out, I really felt almost disabled. I'm just starting to see some very small improvement in my wind and in my strength, and I've lost 12 pounds.
My workouts are a combination of cardio and weights; my goal is to do cardio 5 days, and strength 3 days, but with the gym 25 minutes away, I doubt I've EVER reached that goal. Stuff always gets in the way, and I've been trying to arrange a way to work out at home when I don't make it, but that's hard for me since all my motivation is connected with actually getting to the gym.
Anyway, I'll stop here. I'm leaving for the Halloween weekend, but I will try to check these boards from my sister's house.
Thanks, all!
Lisa

First an big congratulations on your success so far. You have made great start! And you have some really great goals.
Have you ever thought about working out at home? If the gym is too far away or too inconvenient to get to, you probably won't make your goal unless you really put some effort into it. Try getting some hand weights or an exercise video at home. Go for a walk. There are lots of other things to do. JMO.
Glad to have you here!

Incidentally, I joined the gym at a local community center nearly two years ago, and kept it up for only about 4 months. The hours weren't the best for me, and I also disliked driving to get there. I've done better with video tapes and running - they're always there.

In answer to some of your feedback: I'm fairly attached to my gym, even though it's 25 or so minutes away -- my little girl goes to preschool fairly close to there which guarantees that I go in at least 3 days. The other 2 days I also go in because she loves the babysitter they have (which is a really, really nice feature of my Y).
It's so easy. I go in, eat a banana on the way in and bring a Luna bar for after (on the recommendation of my friend/guru/personal trainer!). Walk in, get on the treadmill, go for 30 minutes then get on the bike/recumbent bike for another 15. Then if it's weights day, spend another hour on the circuit, then stretch out. I also take Cardio Kickboxing which I'm really growing to love, and Strong Women strength training class, which can be a hard weights class which I barely hang on to! I'd love to have another straight cardio class like step or somehting but the Y only offers a combination of strength and cardio, interval training type stuff. I need a break from the treadmill sometimes and I like group exercise.
On the days I don't make it in it would be great to have a good routine at home, but it's just not as easy for me. I have a mini-tramp that I can use at least to get a warmup, and I just bought a stability ball. Mostly cuz I like it :) but also because I would like to do a lot more abs work (posture is a big problem for me; I'm taking yoga but it's really hard, my body doesn't really like to be worked that way. So I have all these exercises for the ball, I have some hand and ankle weights, but really have to develop a comfortable routine for home.
As you can see, I really need folks to talk to about this stuff! I'd love to hear others' workout routines. And I havne't even touched on my nutritional changes.
That's all for now....more later, and thanks again!
