New here!

Hi, all. I'm a 42-year-old mom of 2 (age 3 and 6) and I've been looking around for an active message board to join where I can share my workout ups and downs and efforts to reach my goal -- ot lose 50 pounds. I joined a Y in August and since then I've become utterly obsessed with fitness (which is how I do everything: obsession!). I'm trying to make changes in what I eat very slowly, since that's my downfall. I'd like to take a full year to lose the 50 pounds, or even more, as long as the changes that bring it about are permanent changes!

I'm extremely out of condition. In fact, before I started working out, I really felt almost disabled. I'm just starting to see some very small improvement in my wind and in my strength, and I've lost 12 pounds.

My workouts are a combination of cardio and weights; my goal is to do cardio 5 days, and strength 3 days, but with the gym 25 minutes away, I doubt I've EVER reached that goal. Stuff always gets in the way, and I've been trying to arrange a way to work out at home when I don't make it, but that's hard for me since all my motivation is connected with actually getting to the gym.

Anyway, I'll stop here. I'm leaving for the Halloween weekend, but I will try to check these boards from my sister's house.

Thanks, all!

Lisa

Margie, thank you! Yes, I'm a bit in denial about the coming of winter, but my kids have been going to this preschool for 4 years, and we always make it there for drop-off and pick-up, so I guess I can drive the additional 3 miles and work out. That takes care of 3 days a week which isn't enough, of course. So, yes, that home routine is going to become important!

However, I have observed that if the folks here in Maine know how to do anything well, it's MOVE SNOW. So it's only actually during the storms or immediately after that you really can't get anywhere. But I guess if you've lived in Caribou, you know all about it!

As for yoga, that video sounds right up my alley. I know I need to stick with yoga, but it's the only thing that's discouraged me, since getting on this regimen (aside from losing a brilliant and wonderful fitness director at our Y about a month ago -- that was a blow.)

I'm starting to realize that pretending I can work out like crazy and not decrease what I eat and still lose weight is another example of me living in a dream world. In a way, I HAVE decreased what I eat, but not enough. I'm very scared of trying to go that route because I very easily get to feeling deprived. It's this game I'm playing with my head -- if I'm not on a diet, I can't break anything. But if I'm just focusing on getting to like eating better, healthier food, then I'm just trying to improve my life. But at some point I think I am going to have to deprive myself of SOMETHING.

I guess I'm feeling this way because we're just coming out of Halloween and...well...I didn't hold back in any way :(

Nancy, today I went to Target (I love that store, and I don't have one near me; I'm at my sister's house in Providence now) and lingered longingly in the home workout equipment aisle. I just bought myself a stability ball, and I'm going to get a mini-tramp from a neighbor, but I picked up the resistance bands off the shelf and drooled a bit, then looked at the price and put it back. Then I looked at the exercise mats, looked at the price, and put it back. Checked out the weights and realized the 5-pound dumbells I still have somewhere are no longer adequate. But I didn't buy anything yet. What I did buy was a very good Walkman to help me beat the treadmill doldrums. :)

If I really need this stuff, I think I'll probably hit Ebay and see how I do there.

The town where I go to the gym is really the focal point of my social life, where we do our shopping, etc. (we live in a pretty isolated rural area) so I love going in, and so far don't anticipate a problem except for acts of God. I love exercising around other people, taking classes, and the treadmills overlook the gym where I watch high school kids play basketball, so it's kinda fun.

I hear you about waiting before going out on buying sprees. I'm a bargain hunter anyway. I'd never have paid the $30 bucks for resistance bands, no matter how badly I wanted 'em :)

Thanks for the link to the yoga video. I'm not sure what I'll do there -- I am taking an introductory class with a very nice instructor who understands my limitations, so I could just keep doing that for awhile. I'd like to take Tai Chi also -- my DH is quite accomplished at it, though he hasn't done it in awhile. I'd like to go with him, especially since everything else I do in the fitness area is by myself.

As for stores, if I want any decent ones at all I have to drive to Bangor, about 45 minutes away. I like going there but I dont' make it often -- and they dont' even have a Target.

More later...have to take my girl to the playground :)
